16 mile stroll, dear?

Mar2320096:05 p.m.

L: What shall we do today, hon?

A: Hmmm. Not sure, Darl, whaddya fancy?

L: D'you know? I really fancy walking from Bath to Bristol!

A: OK! (Who said that?!)

A: Sarnies made, camel-back-packy things and she-pee dusted orf, spare socks at the ready...

L: Let's do it!

And so it was.

L and I headed orf to the Avon River and the Avon Trail at 12.30pm on Sunday (we don't really do mornings, dahlings!) with very little idea how long the river walk to Temple Meads in Bristol would BE exactly ("um.. between 15 and 25 miles I think"): but we had an OS map and a print out of the trail what we'd google'd and money for a cab home if we got stuck in the dark..

I was a tad nervous that Trailwalker training demons might resurface and that the walk would be emotionally fraught (super-duper long walks and Annie don't mix)... but it was OKAY.

Phew!

And what a glorious day it was too.

We saw some loverlee villages and this here mill:

And some people out enjoying the sunshine on boats:

And some spectacular countryside and one or two (or three or four..) weirs n locks:

Went through metal and wooden x-ing gates and traversed stiles. OK there was only this one stile... I didn't want it to feel as redundant as it looked...

We followed signs:

And we got to the end of the road 16 miles and 6 hours later. Just about in the nick of daylight....

....and then it took us 15 minutes to get home on the train.

Highlights included:

  • the company
  • the sun
  • the scenery
  • the bag of dolly mixtures
  • an answerphone message from Lou; helping us get through a bored-bored-bored section
  • seeing a man in the river get rescued by a speedboat & beefy firefighters
  • the saxophone player wending his way down the path in the middle of nowhere while playing "The Waltons" theme tune (random!)

Lowlights included:

  • wondering whether the sun might set on us, leaving us to die alone in the wilderness
  • gunfire in the bushes and a howling cackle coming from the said gunman leaving us to wonder whether we'd die alone in the wilderness
  • wondering if we might die alone in the wilderness

So no long run this weekend.  But the walk'll do me nicely.

  • GETM 'Lovely photos and so pleased you survived the day out! I did a long 12 mile walk (as opposed to a short 12 mile walk!) recently and thought it would be easier than jogging (cannot class myself as a runner yet?) Boy did I ache when I got back! Have a good week' added 24th Mar 2009
