Overview

By now I am sure that you have all heard. I have lost the plot! It's official.

I have entered to run in the New York City 2008 Marathon, raising money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

What started off as a joke dare over the Xmas holidays has now materialised into an exciting reality.

I know that there is going to be a lot of hard work and pain over the next 9 months, and i will keep you all posted on my progress on this blog.

I would like to thank Emma in advance for supporting me fully on my journey.

I need the support of you all to encourage me to carry on when I feel like packing it all in.

Thanks Guys.

Jusst to confirm that i have gone totally nuts I have signed up for 2 marathons in 2009.

I am doing Blackpool (hometown) on 5th April and then Edinburgh on 31st May.

I want to continue training, and I need to have a goal ahead to keep me motivated. I am going to try to do better training this time, to include speed training and maybe do a yoga class to get flexible!

Anybody got any advice for a 2nd marathon runner?

Obviously I would love to do NYC again in 2009, but it comes down to money as ever. We shall see. London is also a target over the next couple of years.

Can anyone recommend a god european marathon to do?

Wow, harder than I thought! It was also a better experience than I thought!

NYC marathon rocks!! I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Really really tough, and the waiting around from 4am killed me, and definitely had an effect on me for the last few miles. The crowd were fab and really encouraged you around the course whenever you needed it.

I did the course in 4hrs 22mins and 30 secs, which was longer than I had hoped, but I was dead on my feet for the last few miles. Everytime i stopped to grab water and walk whilst drinking it was painful as hell getting going again, my left knee just locked and took some persuasion to get moving again.

In the end I was just looking to do it in less than 5 hours, which in hindsight was a mistake, as i probably wasn't hard enough on myself - and should have had a firmer target in mind, and carried on going when i felt like stopping to drink.

If they had made the drinks easier to take in whilst running i.e. in a pouch then this may have helped also. As they were in paper cups i basically had to walk whilst drinking.

The course itself was tougher than i thought, even though I had read about it and seen the elevation charts, the bridges were killers!!

Seeing the GOSH team cheering me on was amazing, and also seeing my two family groups on the last few hundred yards was really emotional, and made all the pain and training worthwhile.

If i have learnt anything from the race it is that I perhaps didn't do enough training, and I perhaps wasn't focused enoguh come race day. I suppose this was down to combining the race with an NYC holiday. Having said that i think all the waiting around and lack of food from 4am played a major part too!

Loved it, would love to do it again next year.

Somebody stop me!!

Running with a hangover isn't a good idea, no matter how small the hangover.

Went out last Saturday night in the Rolls Royce Phantom we got from the Charity auction event, and obviously had a few drinks. It was a late night too, but I was determined to do the run in the morning.

I was never in the right frame of mind for it all week actually, and i paid the price for it. I did 20 miles instead of the planned 22, and walked the remaining 25 minutes home.

My mind is now totally focused on NYC and doing the 26.2 I am confident that I can do it but I know that the last 4 or 5 miles are going to be very very difficult. I am just hoping that the sheer buzz of the event and the people will get me through it.

Have been working away this week so far, so not managed to get out. I will do a few miles tomorrow night, and take it pretty easy from now on until the big day.

Butterflies are starting to set in every time I think about it too much.

My race number form came through the post yesterday which i need to take to the Expo to get my race number and race pack etc.

BLOODY HELL IT IS REALLY GOING TO HAPPEN!!

Thanks Hilary, Phil, and Lucy for your advice on whether I should get the 4am bus, or try to make my own way there at a later time.

I think the general consensus is that I should get the bus, and just go with the flow.

You are all probably right about a lack of sleep the night before anyway, so I may as well get out of bed at 3.30am and get the adventure started!

I have one last big run to do this Sunday, I am going to try to do 22 miles; then that it basically it.

I did 13 last Sunday and a couple of 5's this week so far.

Not long to go now!!

Just found out that our tour party has been assigned the 4am bus to Staten Island from Midtown.

I am seriously considering making my own way there later in the morning.

Any ideas anyone?

Did 19 miles on Sunday. Felt like I could have done a couple more too.

For most of the 2hrs 48mins it took me to do the 19 miles, I had the Ricky Gervais podcasts on my ipod. They definitely made the task easier.

Found out today on the NYC website that I am in Wave start 3, which begins at 10.20am. This won't be too bad as long as I don't have to be down at the start line for 7am.

I feel like I can do it now, doing 19 was a definite mental boost for me!

Start spreading the news............

Why are evening runs so much harder than the weekend morning runs???

I did 5 tonight, but it felt difficult! Whereas, last Sunday it felt ok doing 15.

Does anybody know how close family and friends can get to the finish line in Central Park? Is there a special area for family and friends to gather?

I am more and more starting to think about the finishing line.

Bizarre really.

Only 4 more Sundays to run and then its the marathon itself.

Did just over 14 today, my first big run for a couple of weeks, and I actually felt quite good. Going to do 19 next Sunday, then 16, then 22, then 8, then its NYC!!!!

Wow, getting excited now, booked our restaurants and show reservations for the Friday and Saturday, and I am looking forward to seeing our family and friends from Florida and Canada who are joing us in NYC for the weekend.

I tried some positive thinking and visulisation whilst running today towards the end, and I actually think it worked!

I pictured the finish line in Central Park, and tried to imagine the feelings I would feel at the end. I think I will probably end up crying like a baby, out of sheer relief and joy!!! LOL!!
