Training Gets Started...

Hi Everyone!
I thought it was about time I started to do some training so about 4 weeks ago I joined the gym. (Please bear in mind that a gym is an alien place to me so I was being very brave).
I found all the instructors at my new gym to be very helpful and keen to give me guidance on stamina building. So I firmly believe that I will be able to complete the GNR successfully.
I've come across two problems since my training started. The first being blisters. I have terribly flat feet and managed to get one huge 10p piece sized blister on the area where the arch of my right foot should be (and a smaller one on the left foot). I bought some gel insoles to support the arch and the blistres have gone so all seems fine at the mo.
However, I am only running 2.5miles at the moment - nowhere near the required 13 - and I am worried the blisters might return when I start running greater distances.
Anyone got any flat feet/blister advice?
The second problem I've had is illness. I've had flu (in May!!!) so I've had to miss a few training sessions. Gutted!!!

klebe 'Socks - try changing your running socks, you can get advice on anti-blister socks from a good running shop. I am using Monoskin socks at the moment - they have even got a L and R on them so that you know which feet to put them on as the padding is foot specific. Get your trainers checked out by the running shop too to make sure they are the right ones for your shape feet. Your distance is fine at the moment - don't worry. Good luck' added 11th May 2006

Giddyup 'yep, I agree with mike...I rarely have blisters now that I run with running socks, made of breathable material instead of just "normal" white ones. Of course, I always get a few small blisters when I haven't been running for a while---then they become calloused and they're fine. (Yes, lovely, I know) You're off to a great start, by the way!' added 11th May 2006
