The Smart Trainer

We all know to run a marathon you need to have a solid base of consistent training. A slow build up of the miles over the course of the next few months; with a little bit of speed thrown in now and again be means of a 5k, or 5 miler are just the ingredients that will allow you to finish the race.
So, how many miles do you need to run in order to get you to the finish line? With work, family time and marathon training, there is a lot on your plate.
To get around all of this, I propose you start by becoming a "smarter trainer." I realize that this is not something new, but it's something that many runners who are training for a marathon fail to incorporate into their plan. They fear, that not getting enough (a lot) of miles will not get them to the finish line. I disagree.
Here are some keys to being a smarter trainer;
- You do not need to put in the huge slow, slogging miles every weekend. Go long every two weeks.
- Breakup the miles, get up in the morning for a 4 mile run and then go out again for another 3 miles in the evening.
- Take a full recovery day. Spend Sunday with the family.
- Try swimming, or cycling as an alternative to pounding the hard surfaces.
- Get in the weight room and strengthen your legs and abs.
- Alternate a huge mile day for a quality workout of hills, intervals or a tempo run.
The idea behind being a smarter runner is to be out on the road less, spend more time with your family while still being fit enough to finish the Columbus Marathon. Being a smarter trainer is a mindset. Many runners just do not believe in themselves, and end up doing more than is necessary. Believe in yourself and be consistent and you will finish the race.
Good Luck.
