Train to Eat for the Columbus Marathon
May2220084:11 a.m.
Endurance training requires that you "fuel up" to go long and steady, just as you would a car when traveling a long distance. There are no short cuts, you must simply eat right, at the right times, the right quantities in order to keep your performance strong through training and into race day.
The time to practice eating correctly is, now.
Here are some eating tips for training sessions lasting more than 90 minutes.
- Eat something at least an hour to an hour and a half before a workout.
- Do not skip meals, before working out.
- Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
- Consume snacks that are a little higher in carbohydrates.
Since now is the time to practice using certain foods before training, you can use this time to experiment. Once you have successfully found what works for you, you will be able to use it before the big race. Though I would still practice by eating before a minor race in your buildup to the Columbus Marathon.
If you unsure how to proceed, contact a nutritionist that has worked with endurance athletes before. They can develop a plan for you much like a coach will build a training program; consider them your food coach.
Good luck with your training.
