Gutted

Morning fellow buzzers. Hope everyone is well and that your running is going okay during these dark cold winter days. I managed to get out for a run on Saturday and did just over 7 miles. Was hoping to do more but just didn't have the time - still 7 miles is better than nothing. It was quite a pleasant run has well because I waited until all the frost had gone off the ground and the air had warmed up a bit. I even had the sun shinning some of the time too.
I'm a bit gutted today though has I might have to reduce my running for a bit which isn't good because I've got a half marathon in February. I've been experiencing some pain underneath my foot near my heal since last week. I thought it might go in a few days but it was still bothering me yesterday so I thought I'd better get it checked out. Fortunately there's a minor injuries unit near where I live so I called in there on the way home. Apparently I've got Plantar Fasciitis which is inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament and is caused when the ligament develops tears in the tissue resulting in pain and inflammation. I've got to rest it, take ibuprofen and do some exercises and hopefully that will help. To say I'm gutted is an understatement. I don't want to stop my running altogether especially with having the HM in February, but I don't want to make it worse or prolong it. What I might do is just cut down on my run and maybe rest every other day and see how things go.

SuperCaz 'I've had PF. Take it seriously as it can trouble you for years if you ignore it. Ligaments take months to recover so expect it to come and go for a while, even if you do look after yourself. As well as the treatments you are already doing, use ice when it is sore, and do plenty of calf stretches. Tight calves will put more strain on the PF, which could be why it got injured in the first place, but they will certainly prevent it from healing. If you look after yourself now then I don't see why you can't run the half in Feb. Good luck.' added 13th Dec 2011

spudz 'Thanks for the advice SuperCaz. Did it take a while for yours to heal and did you stop exercising altogether for a while or just cut down. Obviously I don't want to do anything to make it worse but I don't really like the idea of not exercising at all especially with the Christmas season coming up.' added 13th Dec 2011

nomadelle 'PF is definitely one to take seriously, I agree with everything supercaz has put above. Sorry to hear this, hope you can keep your spirits up. I'm having some pain on the bottom of my left foot around the heel so this is a reminder to me not to push myself too much. All the best to you.' added 13th Dec 2011

SuperCaz 'I got mine before I was into exercising. My GP wouldn't do anything for it, but kept telling me to rest it, so I ignored it until it got so bad that I couldn't put any weight on my foot at all. Eventually I paid to see a podiatrist who told me to do all the things you have been told to do, and made me an orthotic (mine was damaged in the arch, so I needed an arch support - you probably don't need that if your problem is at the heel). It was probably 2 months before I was walking comfortably, and several more months before I was pain free. That was 9 years ago and I still occasionally get a twinge if I do something stupid, like go for a long walk in the wrong footwear (think Christmas parties and all that dancing in high heels), but it goes away within a day and doesn't stop me from running.
