BHIVA is committed to providing excellence in the care of those living with and affected by HIV, acting as a national advisory body to health care professionals and other organisations on all aspects of HIV treatment and care services. BHIVA's main activities include the development of clinical guidelines and standards, national clinical audit programmes, educational activities, annual conferences, and promotion of clinical research as well as advising on national policy. The association has close links with patient and community groups and has patient representation on all its committees, including its governing body.
The BHIVA Research Awards are given annually to members to conduct research to improve the clinical care of people living with HIV in the UK. BHIVA wishes to raise funds to substantially increase both the number and value of its research awards

BHIVA holds two UK national conferences each year, attracting a broad spectrum of participants including HIV specialists and community representatives. To monitor standards of clinical care BHIVA conducts national audits covering all HIV treatment centres across the UK. To promote high standards of care, BHIVA publishes national clinical guidelines on all aspects of the treatment and care of people living with HIV infection.
