Looks like you survived your first marathon. I'd love to hear your commentary on how things went. CONGRATS!

Yes i did!!!!! My main goal, other than finishing, was to get in under 5hrs. For me it was very warm that day. I was aiming for an 11:00m/m pace and i pretty much started and stuck with that pace. I was feeling great for the first half. i drank at every water station. Water at every one and gatorade about every other. Took my power gels at about every 1.5 hrs.
At the turnaround i got the wind in my face and noticed it was really warming up. I still felt pretty good til about mile 16. Then i started going downhill every mile. At 20 miles i was 3:40. Still right on schedule but i was starting to really struggle. At 21 i was gassed. I had to walk a little bit. i ran to 22 then we entered birch park. That was bad news! No air, smelled like sewage. everybody was walking. I struggled real bad til i got out of there.
At 24 i knew i was getting close but man was i exhausted. I had to walk a couple more times but only for a minute each time. When i turned into the south beach parking lot and saw the flags at the finish line,i ran as hard as i could. Which i`m sure wasn`t very hard! I heard them announce my name and i managed to raise my arms as i crossed the finish line. My time was 4:58:51...I f`ing did it!!! Overall i thought it was an awesome experience..But what was up with the raw sewage smell in birch park???

and thanks for the tips JP. I did get some runs in along A!A but i was NOT prepared for Birch park!!!

It smells like that because it is a swamp, and once it gets hot, it stinks. I hope the guys who run the show are reading the posts and will give serious consideration to altering the route and getting rid of the park. Sounds good on paper, but....

Congrats again on accomplishing your goals. It is hard when you hit the wall, but you did what was necessary and kept going. I'm guessing it will be the first of many marathons for you. It gets "easier" :D . Hopefully you will give A1A another try.

Oh i`ll definitely run A1A again. My only complaint was the swamp..The water stations were plentiful, lots of gatorade, lots of volunteers. The cops did a great job with the traffic. The whole experience was just awesome. We have a marathon up here in rochester in september and i`m going to run that. I doubt i`ll do one between now and september though. See ya
