Are IPODs permitted during the A1A run?
Last year there were plenty of us who had them. I know that the FAQs state that they are not permitted but I'm sure that was there last year too. A friend of mine ran the Miami one and they wore them. Again, on the site it stated that they we not permitted.
Hopefully someone will chime in with a more concrete answer. We can also ask when we pick up our packages.

I also used IPOD 2 weeks ago at AIG Miami Marathon......
Have NEVER had a problem.....
This is a fairly small event. And it will be dark for the first 1/2/ hour. Also this is FLORIDA...we have a pretty laid back and causal atmosphere.
Weather update as I live and train here...Be prepared for HUMIDITY! Weather forcast is predicting a pretty warm race on Sat. Low's 68 and high's 80. If accurate will be great running while dark but when that sun comes up (around 7:00ish will feel as if it is 80). Also, be prepared for a breeze off the ocean if there is any wind that day, again 5 MPH wind can feel like 35MPH.
See you at the finish line
More and more, races are being forced by USA Track and Field to enforce the no iPod rule. I'm working on organizing a local 5k in my town and asked what the deal was with the crackdown. Seems pretty ridiculous since the roads are closed, but the person at USATF said they have had some incidents where people have driven onto/through a closed course and runners have been hurt. One marathon (can't remember which one) actually reviewed video footage of the finish line and anyone they saw with headphones was DQ'd from that year's race and barred from the event in 2008.
I would ask around at the expo if they are doing anything like that and if they aren't, go for it.
If you ask, they are going to tell you that they are not allowed. They have to as it is a certified event. If you have ever been to any of the other events run by ESM, you would feel pretty comfortable running with your iPod. If you are really nervous about it, pull your earphones out when you are coming to the finish. It would, however, thoroughly surprise me if they enforce.
I also don't think it will be 80 by 7. The high is predicted for mid-80s, and highs usually hit in the afternoon. It will feel muggy for those who aren't used to it. I live on the beach and run the course everyday. The wind is generally out of the east, but there are some predictions that it will be still on Sunday.
How about we just live by these lines..."it's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission."

I do not think it will be 80' at 7:00 AM either. My comment read "...when that sun comes up (around 7:00ish will feel as if it is 80..." I make this comment by considering the humidity and temp combo. Also, at ING Miami, 2 weeks ago,I witness ed many runners not prepared for the humidity and in a full sweat within the first mile and clothes (shirts) discarded throughout the course.
As for the breeze, I guess your are a better authority. as I do not live on the ocean. I do know that this morning there was virtually no wind but the very light breeze did feel stronger to me. But that's what I experience and just trying to help others.
Will keep to myself as I have always been "Zen" and just wanted to give this a try.
To all runners and supporters have a great experience and enjoy the run and day whatever the conditions.
Outta here......................
I've been training in -20 degree Celcius, with lots of snow and ice (Canadian winter). It will be a pleasure running by the Ocean, although I am a bit concerned about adjusting to the temperature change. Good luck to all!
It was a problem for the cyclists who yelled from down below to move to one side. Those with Ipods cannot hear. Those with Ipods were told to move to the other lane, and they continued on their own track, without any regard for those who needed to get through. Thus, it is dangerous for all involved when some careless people are too busy listening to their music, certainly struggling to run, unaware of their surrounding and get in the way.
I saw an example of someone wearing there MP3 player with both earplugs in. One time the bicyclist with a Marathon wheelchair participant was needing to get by and she had to be pulled aside by another participant because she didn't hear the person asking her to move to the Right. The one who pulled her aside said you should really just put one earpiece in. She agreed and then not 5 minutes later another (with both earplugs in agan) 2 cyclists with another wheelchair came up and there was a motorcyclist with a video guy on the back. She was totally oblivious to them asking her to move and the motorcyclist went off the side of the roadway in the Birch State Park area. Just goes to show that some people just don't get it!!

I certainly didn't mean to offend you. Since Chicago, everyone seems to be in a complete panic about weather conditions. It is South Florida and there is a good chance it will feel hot and humid if you are from elsewhere.
As for those shirts in Miami, I saw the same thing in 2004 and it was cold and rainy. There are a lot first timers who don't know what to wear, and there are a lot old timers that intentionally layer so they can peel things off as they go.
Please don't keep to yourself. The only way people can get good and well-rounded information is for everyone to participate. I am certainly not the be all and end all for weather, running, or anything else...nor do I wish to be.
Hope you had a great and fun run.
I did feel somewhat "snubbed" and do appreciate the invitation to continue exchanging info via this forum. I just wish more people would use this and the training forum.
As I am somewhat of an "amatuer" runner, I just started running half-marathons with the Martathon of the Plam Beaches 12/2/07, I often have questions or need advice and have nowhere to turn. I tried joining a runnning club, but that is all they do is RUN no social interaction i.e. (Q&A) and they are mostly males so once we begin the run I loss sight of them within a mile. I am 48 yrs old, female (as I see you are, female, which surprised me) and have ran 3 halfs (PB, ING, A1A). I usually run close to a 10 min mile give or take a few seconds. My best finish was ING 2:10:32 Pace 9/57..
Unfortunetly, the day after ING I got a cold and had to train with it for A1A and still was congested on Sunday. Today I am a bit bummed as I wanted to come in at 2 hours and instead my time was 2:17:51. I think the headwind from mile 11 -13 along with my body just being tired was too much for me. I also got a severe sideache at mile 12 which has never happened before and had to stop and walk. It was so bad I thought I would have to walk in but I am stubborn so I started running slowly and it got better and I was able to get on pace after about 3-4 minutes.
Sounds like you have ran alot of marathons? Half or whole or both?
I am pretty much done for the season, I have Crohn's disease and if I can raise enough money I will be running a half in Napa, CA 7/20/08.
I have registered for 4 runs next season beginning with Disney, Palm Beach, ING Miami, A1A. I am going to enter the NY lottery on 2/25 and will give 26 miles a try if I get in. Don't think I have it in me and the thought of running for 5+ hours doesn't excite me too much but I have to run at least one full marathon before this old body breaks down. But I think my preference will always be the half as I know I can always improve within that distance and therefore not lose interest.
How did you do at A1A? I would assume quite well as you always run the course.
Any upcoming runs that are "local" (i.e. hotel not requred) that I don't know about?
Thanks again for the support. Now how do we get more people to get on this forum?

After my dog adventure, I completely lost focus and finished at 2:16, which is fine because I had a great time. I'm not a speed demon by any stretch of the imagination but a 2 hour half is pretty consistent for me. I've yet to break that illusive 4 hour mark in the full, though I'm still trying.
I haven't been running a long time based on a lot of standards, but I've run a lot since I started. My first race was the Miami half in 2004. I quit smoking three packs-a-day 39 days before the start of the race. I basically traded one addiction for another. I like full marathons a lot more than a half.
You have really done a great job if this is your first round of running. It will get better. You should try running some of the local, shorter races that are coming up. The best, in my opinion, is the Riverwalk 5k/5 miler put on by the Junior League. The course is gorgeous. It is part of the three for the road series sponsored by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Road Runners. You can go their website to see the other two (www.gflrrc.org). I don't know what club you joined, but I can tell you the GFLRR is an extremely social club. I'm a member but don't actively particpate in a lot of events. I have a lot friends who do, and they have great times. Most of the races they coordinate/sponsor are in parks west of I-95, and the short running season is about to begin so a lot of races will be coming up. They also plan trips as groups, so it cuts the expense of travel to some of the other races in Florida.
Forums come and go, and I'm guessing this one will stop for a while since the race is done. You might want to try Running Ahead (www.runningahead.com), which has a lot of forums that are very, very active. They also have a pretty good running log if you don't already use one. I'll keep checking back here to see how things are going for you.
Sorry you were surprised I was female...guess that says something about my virtual personality. My husband had a good chuckle.
Happy Running!

Actually I was glad you were a female.......sometimes the males can be a bit intimidating. Guess you didn't get the reply that I know who you are. I was running around mile 4 and saw some woman jump out of the race and go across the street to get a dog. I thought she/you were afraid it was lost and would get hurt. I must have been right behind you....small world:)
Thanks for the info. Ha=e no idea what a running log is used for but will check out the website.
One last question, what do you do to keep you motivated between the running season, besides the small races, and how do you run in the heat of summer? We have a renovated clubhouse with top of the line equipment in the gym so I was just going to run on the treadmill there (where I began this journey) and do my routine gym workout and maybe put in one good long outside run per week. I don't do well at anything in the heat and basically hibernate. This means my training will be a far cry from what I have been doing...will I go bak to square zero?
I'm sure our paths will cross at future runs,,,,,If you go to the A1A webite I entered the photo contest and my pic is #1.
Have a great summer and see you at next years events:)
Vicky
Hi Vicky.
The log just lets you keep track of your mileage, times, and other stats. I mostly keep it to keep up with the mileage on my shoes.
I run outside in the summer; I just get up really, really early and go long before the sun comes up...most of the time. Some days, I go when it is beginning to get hot and just adjust my pace to the heat of the day. A lot of people do what you do and run on a treadmill indoors. You won't lose ground. It is a great way to get in hill work and speed work as well. I suggest that you set it to run on different programs, which will allow you to not only keep up your aerobic fitness but build up muscle groups that aren't focused on in South Florida because it is so flat.
I have a traning program, which is a big help with motivation. I am someone that will get up and do it because it is written on a piece of paper. I have a running coach, but you can go to Runner's World's website and they have one that is free. It is pretty good. You might give it a try--it helps to vary your program and keeps you from getting into a rut.
I don't think you will lose your motivation. Choose something you want to work on during the off season and work out a program that you think will help improve that area.
Feel free to contact me off list if you have questions. I certainly don't have all the answers, but I am happy to at least chat with you about it.
Great picture by the way.
Enjoy the summer.

Thanks for the info. I have Crohn's Disease and they talked me into joing a fundraiser to run in Napa, CA July 20th. They provide all kinds of perks...like coaches which I will take advantage of considering the hills in Napa. I met the walk coach at the Expo and he is incredible. While I was still headed north he was headed south (finish) and I swear he was walking faster than I could ever run...quite a sight.
I see that you are causing all kinds of trouble on this forum "Floridians don't show for marathons" Dino is pissed. I replied but don't remenber under which catagory maybe "Worst Mgmt Co".
Just bought pre-sale tickets to see Lynyrd Skynrd at Misner Ampithether 5/23 (tickets to public go on sale Sat. I actually bought 2 tickets and then bought 2 more tickets in a better location. Interested in the band and buying the tickets..the seats are good as all seats are good at this local they are Sec C Row 30 Seats 13-14 price with all the add on is 139.05. Let me know if you or anyone you know is interested going to put on craigslist by Fri.
Where's your pic? You are a very attractive woman....you got message that I saw you jump out of race to get your dog?
"Contact you off-list" what does that mean? I tried to send a private email but was blocked?
P.S. ran 5 miles on treadmil today...felt great!

I never saw the Dino post, but it must have been pretty good since they took the thread down. I didn't say people don't run marathons; I said SoFla people don't turn out for sporting events in general. I am a sports junkie and a native South Floridian. We have a lot of sports here, and people are pretty apathetic about being spectators. My point was that if you can't get them out to watch typical spectator sports, how are you going to get them out at 6 am to watch people run?

Yes, that is how it read and I supported you on your point. Hell, no one get's out of bed at 4-5AM on a Sunday morning to come see me run yet ANOTHER half, except my husband and that is just because he kinda has too. I do wish though they would have something for the specators to eat, drink, or do to keep occupied becuase I usually end up with over 100 pics and only 5 or so are of me:)
Dino wasn't to harsh. He just compared A1A to ING Miami and I pointed out the differences (i.e many came to ING as a "vacation" and therefore, with spectators in tow. Dino has been pretty critical of the whole A1A experience, as I think Dino was the first to Post "Worst Sports Mgmt", but don't quote me on that. I ended my quote to Dino (a Floridian) that All is never perfect in the world and we Floridians should feel very lucky that we can comfortably train year-round outdoors and just roll out of bed on a Sunday morning and run 4-5 marathons without the hassle of traveling. Oh yea, I did say quit bitching....maybe that's why the Topic is gone? Find it strange the topic dissapeared, as a former lawyer I find it a bit unethical (1st Amendment thing) and would think the issues raised would be of value to the race organizers albeit it doesn't look to good that the first response to the run was negative.
What does off-line mean? As I would like to continue bouncing questions off you (mostly dumb ones but I am new to this) and don't think those on the forum need the info.
V
If you check the top left corner of the page just above "My Favourites," you should have an indication that you have a message. I emailed it through the system with my email, so you we could take our discussion off board.
As for the first amendment thing, the site is based in the UK, and they don't really care about our rules 8) .
I stopped running with my iPod for awhile after a "near-miss" last year. But at the SF 1/2 marathon, I heard about a new earphone technology that allows you to listen to the music but does not drown out the sounds of what's going on around you.
I have been listening to music again ever since. I can listen AND be aware of my surroundings. The AirDrives site has them for sale, but you can get them at Amazon (like I did) and gameshark.
I can't recommend this enuff!!
