Would love to go on safari sometime- has anyone been on one? What did you think of it?

I've not done one in the UK yet *sad face... no one wants to get there car damaged... understandable but booo still.
I've been staying well clear of Knowsley Safari Park for years. Just don't fancy getting my car ripped to bits or having to drive through the boring 'safe' route in the park. Think it would be great if safari parks gave you a Jurassic Park-style jeep to take on your journey once you got to the park to takle the worry out of getting your own vehicle wrecked.
In Istanbul, we won it five times!
Safaris are awesome! I went to Sabi Sabi in the Kruger Park (SA) a few years ago - fantastic experience. Just make sure you get up early for the morning drives, even if you were sozzled the night before, it's well worth it. Expensive but you only need a few nights.

A Jurassic Park-style jeep would be great! Maybe they could play the music whilst you drive... although I guess the Lion King music would be closer to it...
A safari is on my bucketlist, I was trying to acheive it before I was 30 but it just didn't happen. It's a must do before I am 40 though - I gotta see some big cats!
Yeah I'm putting it on my list (at the moment it's a mental list-should really start writing them down)

Were the safari's for the whole day? Was it an expensive trip to do?

Have you been on any other safari's? I managed to make it to West Midlands safari on the weekend... can't imagine it really compared, but there was giraffe's walking right between all the cars and shoving its head through the windows, which was cool!

There wasn't any monkeys when I went there- that'd be aweomse them on the car- probably not for the person who owned the car.

I did a 5 week conservation placement in South Africa and loved it. There is something to be said for working on a project when you head out to Africa rather than just staying and being taken out by a guide. I think you get a far less artificial experience plus you'll find that the companies who run them manage their own ranch or reserve so you can often be the only people actually on them and they are far less spoilt. If you can put up with the early starts and the contradictory idea of paying to work hard in the hot sun, then I think you'll get a lot more out of the hands on approach!

Wow - that sounds pretty fantastic, did you have to pay for it or did you do it though fund-raising?

I did a bit of fundraising but I was pretty lazy and had to spend quite alot of savings to go! I'd do it again though. Can't describe how good it was, maybe the best 5 weeks of my life. My savings were all in shares anyway so they'd be worth nothing now. I try and use that as an excuse anyway! lol

That sounds amazing! What conservation work did you do?

We put in some water holes and did animal surveys. Cleared bush, put up elephant barriers around rare trees. We knocked down some old defunct concrete stuff with sledge hammers too, which was very therapeutic!
