I would love to go to Oz one day- but I haven't a clue where to start! I think I'd like to stop off in other countries on the way to make the most of the journey- but again, where to begin? Any advice? Has anyone travelled to Australia or planning a trip there?
Don't worry, be happy :-D
One of my friends stopped off in Fiji on the way to Australia

I would never go there, way too many scary animals
My friend loves it there though, I will ask her for some tips and get back to you
I've been to Sydney and Melbourne - both really great! I went in their winter so it was a little bit on the chilly side, so it'd be nice to go back in the warmer weather! I'd love to go back again and stop off in Asia en-route - there's so many places to see!

Yeah I think I'd definitely want to go when it's nice and hot! So I could have BBQs on the beach and go surfing

I live in Perth which I love, but there is probably less for tourists than the other big cities. You have some amazing beaches here (cottesloe my fave) fremantle is amazing for the markets and a lazy arvo in little creatures (brewery) If you do make it to Perth a visit to Rottnest is a must. 63 beaches on an island you can cycle round in a day. I love it!The west coast does have the gorgeous margaret river (wine!) and up north (kimberley) which I have not been to yet but have been told it is out of this world.
Cairns is great for snorkelling (I spent last xmas day on the barrier reef - unbeatable) and has amazing beaches, the sort of beach where there isnt another soul and the rainforest meets the sand. Paradise. Beware the stingers though! Jellyfish inhabit the water at certain times of the year and the stings can be pretty horrific. If snorkelling i recommend a wetsuit! Beautiful place though.
Surfers paradise has a great night life and great beaches and surf, is also quite touristy. Good for shopping and the theme parks are great. Quite a few wildlife parks within a short bus trip.
Sydney is great for shoping and night life. Bondi beach is overrated though. The Rocks (old part of Sydney under the harbour bridge) is amazing and they have great markets bars and restaraunts. I hear a trip to the blue mountains is definately worth it. There are heaps of boat trips out to nearby beaches too, Manly is particularly nice.
Melbourne is crazy. Best for shopping and culture. St. Kilda worth the tram ride. Definately visit fed square for dinner (friday after work crowd is a great atmosphere). There are amazing little coffee shops and bars the find down these crazy little streets that look like they go nowhere, so efinately worth exploring. The skydeck has a greay veiw if you dont mind heights. The weather can be a bit 'changeable' so prepare for all seasons in one day!
Makes me want to see a bit more of this place!
Wow, thanks Helen_g! This is great advice! Definitley going to start saving up so I can go! Great barrier reef on Christmas day sounds AMAZING! You're lucky to live somewhere so cool.

Hey Helen G - great rundown of what OZ has to offer, I have to say perth was one of my favourite places, I envy you. Bet it is lovely there now, just stepping into spring
Even though we've had some nice sunny days recently it's hard to ignore the fact that soon it's going to be freezing and dark! Might just spend my winter in Oz instead!!

The random sun in autumn has already thrown me off, spending winter in Australia would just confuse me weather-wise even more!

That would be ace to be able to head off to Oz now for some sun! The sun definitely seems to have given up for now in the UK!
Early 20's out there now. I expect some of the Welsh rugby lads will stop over in Sydney in a couple of weeks time with a certain trophy on their way to the best homecoming of all time!
