Aussie Food

Having been to Aus I know the food out there is great. My question is this: can you call any kind of food "Australian"? Every country has its cuisine but in Australia's case I cannot think of anything you would call singularly Australian. American's have their burgers and their chilli fries, Canadians have Maple Syrup but what do our closest cousins the aussies have?

Also, agree Vegemite is pretty Australian.

Kangaroo burgers are a shout. I've had one and it is pretty different. But guys, Vegemite? I asked for archetypal cuisine not spreads!

Steak and Kidney Pie, Fish and chips, roast beef Hannah! Come on!!!

Although I did say maple syrup for Canada I guess. Still let's up the ante a bit here!

Well I thought that you meant more meals than spreads, but then you mentioned maple syrup! I don't know, on Home and Away all they seem to cook is casseroles...

Oh Ok well never thought of those, but I'm sure they roast beef in other countries too?? When I was in Italy the family I was staying with kept telling me to cook them something British and I was like "hmm I don't think we really have any British food!"

Macadamia nuts. Not sure they count as "cuisine" but still! Also, Weetabix is originally from Australia.

Apparently Pavlova is a traditional Aussie dessert.

There's a bit of debate on that one with both the Aussies and Kiwis claiming to have orignated it. Most research seems to suggest that New Zealand should get the plaudits.

One of the best tips I picked up from aussie was when you are cooking onions on a hot plate BBQ - pour a little beer over (not too much mind Wink) and this makes the onions sticky and sweet.

Hmmm.their wine? Although I don't know if wine can be classed as "Australian", but they do make some lovely bottles!

I've never tried Australian wine! May have to try some after your high recommendation now

Just make sure it's a hotplate barbie otherwise you'll be pouring your stubby though the bars!
