Is anyone planning on getting involved in the Australian Running Festival next year? It’s got a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon and an Ultra Marathon – so lots of events you could get involved in.

I've never heard of an ultra marathon before, sounds mental! The event sounds cool though, seems like there is something for all ability levels.

I know - I think it'd be a great event to take part in! Can't imagine ever getting to ultra marathon standard though!

Never heard of an ultra marathon before either, surely you must have to be super-human to do one of those?!

Yeah when would you get tot he point where a normal marathon became mundane!!

Posted 25.09.11, 3:55pm

Ahhh how great it would be, to be that fit!

How intense would the training be for an ultra marathon?! You'd never have time to do anything else but run!

I hear older women are really good at ultra-marathons, over younger women or men of the same age.

Really? That's interesting! I wonder why?

How does that work?!

Really, do you know why? Are they meant to be better at normal marathons too then??

Hmm that's interesting. I wonder if it's their mind set? More determined and focussed to prove themselves, perhaps?

Maybe they're just more stubborn!

Well, I think women tend to be more stubborn than men, so could be that! Smile I can sort of see how they might do better than younger women just through having more time to train (if kids have grown up and left home and that sort of thing) perhaps? But I'm not sure really why they would be any better than men?

Perhaps it really is just that they are more stubborn/determined than men. Either that or Deedee is lying to us all!!

Haha well I notice she hasn't been back to defend her claim... Smile

I heard this too. It's in part because of the mindset. Men tend to race too hard too fast and do not stop as much as women, to care for their feet etc.

I guess this makes sense. I'd never heard this before

I see, mystery solved!

I'm thinking of trying out the half marathon - will have to see how training goes! Have started feeling more motivated now the weather's getting better.
