Oz marathons in summer

I'm potentially heading to Oz over Christmas and would like to combine my trip with running a marathon. As this will be summer, are there many summer marathons? I found details of the hobart marathon on January 8th but not many others around this period. Anyone got any recommendations? I don't mind travelling to the race from Sydney as a I have a few days going spare.

You'll find very few Marathons in Oz during their Summer. It's generally far too hot. The better ones such as Sydney, Gold Coast etc tend to be during the Oz Winter/Spring.

What's your favourite Aussie event radioman?

Well Aliza, a few years back i got a PB at the Sydney Half Marathon - but that was only because I got injured on the first of two laps and had to drop out at halfway. The organisers however thought that I had actually run the two laps - and I decided not to put them right !!!!!! The Sydney City to Surf is a great social event due to the enormous number of participants, but you can't really run freely because it's too crowded. The Hill to Harbour half marathon and 10k in Newcastle NSW is one I have done a few times. VERY tough hilly course, but great views out over the beaches. Rather expensive for what you get in return - but most Aussie events are the same !!!!

Hey Radioman - I went to see the Sydney Half marathon when I was there in May, great event and I'd love to see the city to surf too - will you be running this year?

Thanks folks. Maybe the idea of running in the summer heat would be a bit to much. I  imagine though that the races would start pretty early to avoid running in the worst part of the day heatwise. Doesn't the Sydney Half start about 6am normally?

I do have another thought of maybe running the Great Wall Marathon one day so that is going on my bucket list.

It did this year - I was there with Kirstie for the early start (had to leave the house at 5am!) Great atmosphere even at the time of the morning!

Kirstie -Sydney City-Surf is usually in August and I don't go to Oz each year till MArch so I miss it. When I did it, I was actually living in Oz, but that was several years back.

Bet it was pretty cold at that time in the morning!

It was freezing! And I made a massive school boy error and wore flip flops thinking it would warm up quite quickly, it didn't...

Haha 5am in the freezing cold in flip flops... doesn't sound like a fun experience!

Posted 05.07.11, 3:17pm

It really wasn't - I'm not sure why I wore them, I was wearing a winter coat and scarf at the time, so something should have clicked... I'm going to blame the early wake-up time

Haha a winter coat and flip flops, it's a look... Smile At least you had them or you might have actually frozen

Yeah - if only I'd been as wise about my footwear! Although, when it got to 9 o'clock it started to get  really nice and warm, so I got the colour back in my toes, which was nice!

Always good. Bet everyone was jealous of your footwear then!

How about Tasmania, are there any events there? I would imagine the scenery would be amazing.

I'm pretty sure I sensed a lot of jealousy!

i agree

if you come to oz you'll see that most Aussies sit in the shade during the summer. Only maddogs and English men go out int he midday sun!
