New runner looking to take part in some shorter races - any suggestions?

Shorter distances - are you looking at 5 or maybe 10k - the city2surf is 14, is that a bit too long?

A bit too long - but hopefully will have worked up to that by next year's race.

There's a family fun run this September, which is a 4K race:

There's loads on this site too: http://www.weightloss.com.au/events/sydney-events.html . There's a run / walk 4k on there in early October that looks like fun.

How long can you run for at the moment by the way? Are you a new runner?

I've found this site really good, I might be going over to Australia next year, signing up for a r ace would be a good way to stay fit when I'm away.

What distance would you be looking to do CescaMc?

Thanks - there looks like there's some good ones to try out later in the year. I'd like to try and work myself up to some well known events after that - perhaps the City2Surf next year if all goes well with these!

I first developed my passion for running in Australia - as a backpacker it was the cheapest way to work off the travel weight! There are some great routes in and around Sydney.

It sounds like a nice place to start running, would be nice to start running somewhere where you can do it on the beach - much more picturesque than where I run!

I think I'd be more likely to run more if I was somewhere like Sydney - great beaches to run around! Did you take part in any races out there?

Posted 24.05.12, 8:51am

Yeah definitely think I'd run more if I could do it somewhere pretty! Although not sure I'd be able to get up early enough to run before it gets really hot!

Posted 25.05.12, 2:59pm

You'd definitely want to try and avoid the heat. I quite like getting up early and exercising though - I always feel great for the rest of the day and then don't have to do it after work, which is when I'm more likely to talk myself out of it and do something lazy instead.

I am completelty the opposite. I tend to feel tired after some serious exercise. I am defintely a night owl!

Posted 29.05.12, 2:11pm

I wish I'd done a bit more running when I was out there, and made the most of the places there are to run rather than sleeping in all the time!

Posted 30.05.12, 12:35pm

Why were you sleeping all the time Roo!? Hangover?

Posted 31.05.12, 4:23pm

There was a good amount of Hangover time whilst over there - which was nicely helped by a nice rest on the beach the following morning ha!

I feel so much better if I get up and exercise even after a night out - I feel like I sweat it all out!
