Any diet tips for a first-timer?

Hey guys, Sydney will be my first official long distance running event.

Any tips on what I should be eating to prepare? I've been doing the obvious things like drinking the right amount of water and cutting down on certain foods but what kinds of things, especially carbohydrates, do you recommend?

The obvious choice would be pasta, but cous cous, rice are good alternatives too.
