Running Aids GPS

I'm thinking about getting a Garmin Forerunner.

Does anyone know if they really work? Have you used a GPS? Is it helpful?

I've been using Garmin Forerunner 305 for over a year now and even though it's bulky I love it. Now a new model is coming out in March, I believe, smaller and with some fancy interface. That would be a good time to either get a new toy or buy the older model at a discount.
anyway, with garmin you will get all the info you could possibly need: distance, time, speed, heart rate and what is really cool you could see your run on a map so you can analyze why your run even more. The only complaint I have beside the bulk that is, is battery life (10 hours and new model 8 hrs only) but that can be easily solved with portable chargers.
Does anyone really a Garmin? Probably not but it is so much fun and for me it is also a great motivator.
I'll have to say right away that Garmin's software sucks but there are a few sites that allow you to upload your exercise with Google maps and so on.

I am just getting into training for longer than 10K races and have been considering a GPS. I wonder, though, what happens when you are in a big city with buildings or go under a bridge or through a tunnel?

Is there an alternative to the Garmin? I'm on a tight budget.

Status report: I opted for the Garmin Forerunner 305 and have to report that I LOVE it!

I give it full credit for helping me to keep track of and better my pace, and it amazes me to read the details of my runs.

Thanks.

I agree with Ewa, forerunner 305 has a great price/features balance

it works great in the city too, can even use it inside (if you have a tempo sensor)

Go for it and if you need more details.

Cheers,

Dan
