I have just recently started running and really enjoying the challenge. My trainer says that my breathing is really bad and i will never get any faster with the way that i breath. He suggests i take in a really deep breath and let is out, and carry on with this style. This is ok when i am running slow but when i try to run faster i cannot get my breath. So have have one long one then a gasp!! What should i be aiming for? I am soon to be entering my first 10K race and would like to do really well!

your trainer is right, but you don't need to breathe like that all the time. Every couple of mins do a long breath in and then expel really slowly. It will become easy over time and feel natural. It won't to start with!
Just had to add - i find if you relax and concentrate on your breathing, you can slowly get into a breathing mantra. Bit hippy i know, but if you practice it you can almost get into a mediation whlist still pounding out the miles.

I haven't been running very long and i found breathing right and running hard to do. But you will get it right all of a sudden you will notice that you're not thinking about it and it's righted itself. I seem to be ok once i've got that "big breath" out. Good luck :)
I try and just breath in through the nose and out through the mouth, but obviously when you're running uphills or speading up and down its harder. How are you getting on now? Has anyones advice helped yet?
I read the title of this thread and thought to myself...." yes. breathing whislt running is rather essential"
