What do you get for your money?

I ran The British 10k this year totally unaware of all the negatives surrounding it. Plenty of runners moaning about walkers and poor organisation etc. Personally I didn't find it all that awful and enjoyed my day. Most people have said the BUPA 10K is far better to do so am considering it because it's cheaper, although other half wants to know what you get for your money.

Brit 10k entry includes - Race tshirt, Finishers tshirt, Medal, Chip timing and a (awful) goodie bag, free photo downloads from marathon photo.

What do you get with your bupa entry? Chip timing? etc?

I haven't run it so I don't know but it is a really well-organised race and everyone who I've met who has done it, loves it. Plus you get to see some great sights on your route through London!

Thank you for the reply...

I entered purely as it's a similar route but allegedly better organised. Other half is easily swayed by a medal hence the questionTongue out

I'm sure they'll be a decent goody bag. It's organised by the same people who organise the London Marathon, so you should get a medal and some other good bits. Good luck!

There's nothing worse than a rubbish goody bag! It's so disappoitning after you've run an event!

I've never actually done a race or event for the goodie bags etc Undecided If I do a race, it's for a personal challenge and to progress and if I get anything at the end it's a bonus.

I'm more interested in where my money is going, if I'm paying to run in a charity event I want the majority of my money to GO to charity. I don't want .03 of every £1 going to charity and the rest going on sourcing goodies, paying for T-shirts or paying for people to organise it.

I've also heard good things about the BUPA races, they're supposed to be brilliant. Everyone I know who's run them has enjoyed it.

I've got to admit I don't mind my money going to paying for people to organise it, in fact I think it's a priority that it's well organised. I choose to run for charities, but entry fees don't usually go to charities unless it is an actual charity event like "Race for life" etc.

The start of The Brit 10k was a bit silly, a free for all where walkers joggers and runners set off together. Suprised to see that BUPA's 10k is half the price with a better reputation.

The Brit 10k's had a £1 off tiger balm voucher, a Teapigs tea bag, a sachet of silver spoon sugar and a pack of pistachios.

It's not what you run an event for, but it was a bit Undecided to recieve that.

Exactly. You at least want a good snack to have on your way home from the race -especially as I normally go all shaky after running so I need food! I agree that's not the reason you partake in a race, and I'm not expecting a free iPod or anything. Just maybe a nice snack and a mini deodorant! Wink

Haha the sachet of sugar is the best bit! It's as if they were in the hotel in the morning having breakfast like "Oh god, this goody bag is terrible isn't it? Grab some sugar from the table and chuck it in there, they'll love that"

I went to a beauty salon the other day where the advertised "a goody bag full of delightful treats", which turned out to be a pen and some Yorkshire Tea. ..

Aren't they only a couple of quid anyway?  Haha I'm sure I got a pack of three for a fiver - damn if only I have my pound off voucher It would have been 4

No way, bet you were disappointed - that's the worst goody bag ever! I'm not sure anyone has ever described a pen as a delightful treat before!

I have only one gripe with goody bags - cotton t-shirts Yell. We're runners! That's why we are running in your race. Give us a technical T that we can use to do more running. I don't even care if that bumps the entry fee up a bit. To be honest, I'm much happier at a local fell race where you get no goodies at all than I am taking home another useless cotton bloomin' T-shirt!

Posted 22.08.12, 5:39pm

What's wrong with cotton tshirts (sorry, I'm not a runner, I don't understand these things!)

Posted 23.08.12, 12:56pm

You run, you sweat, your cotton T-shirt becomes saturated, it gets heavy, it sticks to you, the moisture clinging to your skin makes you cold. Its horrible, dangerous even, hypothermia a real possibility in winter or up on the mountains where the wind blows hard. Of course you still sweat in the modern 'wicking' fabrics, but they do let the moisture evaporate, they'll give you hours where cotton gives you only minutes.
