Has anyone been? Is there much to do round that area?

Hi Rubyloo

I'm afraid there is not a lot to do around the henge itself unless you are a Druid at the summer solstice, the stones are quite impressive especially when you learn about the journey that people must have had to get them there.  They are all fenced off and can be quite a disappointment when you get there.  ANother henge can be found at Avebury, West of Marlborough along the A4 and towards Swindon.  You can walk around these and they have a museum there.

Salisbury is a lovely City which is quite close to Stone Henge, worth a visit if you like Cathedral Cities.

Hope you enjoy your time there.

Hi,

I visited stonehenge and the surrounding area about this time last year as a friend of mine was geting married in Calnes in Wiltshire. If you are ever around that area then Devises is a lovely town and efinitely worth a visit. it's very pictureesque and had a lovely canal with 21 locks all in a row, very impressive and a lovely walk.

Thanks ladies! I'm going to wait for the weather to get a bit better and venture over there - fingers crossed that the British weather gets better!

Its not stonehenge, but if you want to visit a beautiful area and see some stones, try the Merry Maidens in Cornwall, the stones may only be a few feet high but you won't be surrounded by people and they aren't fenced off, its less pretentious.  Also they are lots of other stone monuments, Lanyon Quoit is good, and you also get to be in one of the most beautiful places in the UK.

Sounds good thanks lazy boy - I'll look into it! Fingers crossed the weather stays nice - a good incentive to stay in the UK for a holiday!

Might have to pop there for a visit! Any recommendations on good places to stay down there?

The deep west is the most rugged, Sennen Cove, Porthcurno is a good place to start, good beaches and the coast path around that area is the best and there are a few pubs along the way. My other favourite places are Fowey, Falmouth, Daymer Bay. Avoid Newquay etc, just too many people.  You can hire a bike and do the Camel trail from Bodmin to Padstow, flat all the way,

A flat ride sounds do-able! Could be good to do on the next bank holiday weekend - roll on August!
