ITB - get a foam roller!

I know loads of you have been struggling with your IT bands. I am too so I thought I would share my discovery with you - the foam roller.
My physio gave me one and told me use it every day which I've been doing and the improvement is remarkable. It's a bit painful but you soon get used to it.
It's basically a foam tube, about foot and half and long, which you roll the outside of your thighs on while taking your weight with your one arm.
I was considering pulling out two weeks ago, but with a bit of rest, shortening of my stride, stretching and using the roller, I managed 18 miles on Saturday with very little problem.
I was practically pain free afterwards, managed a swim the following day and went spinning last night. It is nothing short of a miracle.
My physio said yesterday that I now have normal marathon runners' tension on my outer thighs which is a huge improvement.
Although I've abandoned plans for a good time, I now believe that I will at least get around on April 22nd.
Good luck to everyone.

I would try your local physio. That's where I got my mine.
Good luck x

You can buy foam rollers through The Physical Company. They are fantastic for stretching out any tight muscles! Keep away from kids though....they soon become a fairly hefty weapon!!

thank god - there is hope yet then. i have done my IT in and now am in offical panic mode. went to sports injury clinic last thurs and she said its early stages nothing to worry about - have been stretching and icing and rolling a tennis ball along the IT band(odd) and yesterday went out for a run after about a week off and had to stop at 4 miles. i am going again too physio tomorrow tho so hopefully with more rolling / massaging and icing and poss acupunture (ooh lovely ! needles) i might be alright before the day. it is great to know yours is much better. theres always strapping/ gels/ nurofen i suppose as well. good luck

Hello,

Thanks for the tip. I too have an ITB issue and got one from Amazon. It arrived yesterday and I tried it last nith after a 15k run. Boy was it painful! It also seems a little big - what should the ideal diameter be please?

Thanks

Karen

Karen you might want to ask this question over on the current marathon board. You'll probably get a better (and quicker!) response!
