Interval Training

Is interval training the best way to get fitter? I.e. running at a constant speed for 20 minutes isn't as effective as running fast and then moderate intermittently for 20 mins?

I have no idea but I'd be interested to know the answer! I guess it's good as you'd probably work harder for the faster bits after you've had a bit of a "rest" in between.

It's good for getting you fit, but also very effective for calorie burning.

It's good for training yourself to run faster too. There's an article on it here: http://www.realbuzz.com/articles/improve-your-running-speed-through-interval-training-gb-en/

Interval training is tremendously effective, and best thing about it, it is so flexible, whatever you are aiming for, intervals are just the ticket to get you from where you are now to where you hope to be. They do indeed stimulate the metabolism more than steady state running / cycling / rowing / swimming / etc so more calories will be burned. You can pitch them at any level too - people tend not to think of run / walk as being interval training, but it is, just at a more moderate level of intensity than the full on sprints or mile repeats you might be choosing if you're a more established runner.
