What is there to do in the area? I am bringing my family, so can someone tell me about family-friendly attractions, etc?

I've been wondering the same thing. I am unfamiliar with the New York area but do understand that this is in Long Island.
Is Long Island close to Manhattan? I mean, would it be possible to visit NYC while there for the marathon?
If not, is there anything of interest in Long Island?

There are three local papers to check out --- Southampton Press (publishes an East Hampton Press edition), The Independent, and The East Hampton Star.
Distance to New York City is 106 miles or roughly 2.5 hours by train, bus, or car. You can take the kids to the Museum of Natural History and then down to John's Pizza on Bleeker St in the Village.
In East Hampton the ocean beaches if it is warm, check the papers for children's events, visit Guild Hall, take a fishing boat out of Montauk, walk around the village of Sag Harbor, visit a winery on the North Fork or an organic farm in Amagansett. At night there is Stephens Talkhouse for music and galleries and many social and cultural events. We also have a film festival.

If your kids are relatively young (under 14), you can visit the Montauk Lighthouse and take in the awesome views out to Block Island. You can visit Pumpkintown in Watermill, where you can shoot ears of corn out of a hydraulic cannon, walk in a giant corn maize, pick your own pumpkins, and climb on giant wooden replicas of John Deere tractors, airplanes, slides ..... and eat roasted corn, sip freshly made apple cider, or pick your own apples!
Montauk is great. There is the lighthouse as well as Camp hero.
Montauk downs for golfing. This course could be a US open course its so tuff.
Gossmans dock is great
Sag harbor is great
Shelter Island
there is just so much to do out that way......................I would stay away from the city and just enjoy the east end
My name is Matt Linick and i own Running Away - The Active Travel Company for Runners. I am working with the race organizers and helping to coordinate any travel related needs people may have in relation to the event. Manhattan is just a 2 hour drive away from LI and is easy to get to and/or from. I can be reached at matt@runningawayonline.com and would be happy to offer suggestions. Thanks!
