AAAARGH! Is that a calf strain I feel? Help please?

Hello all,

just a quick query; I would appear to have given myself a calf strain.

Position: just below the rear of my right knee, fairly central, at the top of the calf.

Happened: Sunday morning, just after I passed 12 miles on a 13 mile training run. I slowed up and nursed it back home.

Went for a little 3 miler this morning; after just under a mile, I began to feel a little 'discomfort', so nursed my way back home, stretching out the calf every 1/2 mile.

Worry: I'm training for the London Marathon [middle aged bloke, crisis etc etc!!!] and am a little concerned that this might damage my training schedule.

Training history: I've been doing 'long runs' each fortnight, biggest one so far was 16 miles. Due a 19 this weekend and then a 21 in two weeks. Due another 21 4 weeks prior to London.

Help: advice, experiences, anything really. This place seems full of experienced runners, so I would really appreciate advice on how to manage this.

Me: 47, former rugby player, 15 1/2 stone [hope to lose at least a stone prior to London], dodgy back [broke when 21 - did Glasgow marathon in late 80s], aiming to finish the thing, usually doing long runs at around 11:00 to 11:30, so expect a runtime between 4 1/2 to 5 hours.

I am not a racer, but a trudger, with a fairly low leg lift, I sort of shuffle but it works for me....I just want to finish.

Thanks in anticipation.

Regards, Jason A.
