Sore toe from running
I have the typical runner's nail at the moment but it's becoming so sore I can't run. Is there any way I can help it recover quicker?
I take it you mean a black toe nail? It's a blood blister under the nail, so if you can drain it with a streile needle, should relieve some of the pain. Long term, might be worth investing in a new pair of shoes with a bit more room in the toe box. May also be worth experimenting with your lacing, there are ways to lace the shoe tighter to your ankle which stops your foot sliding forward so much.

Ouch, that's going to hurt. Thanks for your help. Are black toe nails common with runners?
They are relatively common but I bet quite a few cases could be avoided. If you have pressure on your toes, look into a slightly wider/longer trainer as Rob says. New Balance are one brand that do several widths, but asics and mizuno can also be a fairly generously sized as standard. Good running socks should also help if there are any slipping or rubbing issues.
If you are unsure about popping the blister yourself go and see the doctor for micro surgery. It shouldn't hurt to make a tiny hole on the nail and release the blood, but avoid poking the nail bed as that's the sensitive bit. Once the nail has gone black you're likely to lose it, so don't freak if it drops off.
A black toenail is basically a minor injury, it can be avoided if it's something like your socks and trainers causing it, but general friction and impact can cause them. Steadier progression is thought to reduce them, but they can happen at any time really.
I'm sure this happened to me...but not when I was running. I was wearing heels that were too high (so silly - I've learned my lesson now though) - the pressure was all on my toes and and my toe was rubbing against the shoe all night. The next day my toenail was completely black and a couple of weeks later it fell off (sorry to be graphic). Now I have an ingrowing toenail that is really painful. Definitely take GoneFishin and Rob's advice on board - you don't want to end up with this because it's so painful!
I've never heard of this before, it sounds extremely painful!! Hope your toe'ls feeling better CescaMc?
