Ran about 6 miles sans pod, then put one bud in an ear because of the long distances between entertainment and the fact that I can't entertain myself for over 4 hours.

No problems, didn't get hit by a car, no one died, didn't get yanked from certain doom.

Race course is closed to cars, wheelchairs go our first and the course is pretty wide throughout. Still had earbud in for pictures post-race. And while I still don't have my shirt from the race (they were out of L and XL by 2pm Saturday and Nike appartenly can't make new shirts in 7 weeks), they did not strip me of my medal once the pictures came out.

So, it was the way it should be... officially off limits so that they stay sanctioned by all governing bodies, but not stupid with the enforcement.

I have so much trouble not being able to listen to music while I run.

I don't understand why the races don't allow iPods when used with headphones that allow the user to hear what's going on around you.

I use AirDrives, and they allow me to hear every sound of my music while at the same time, I can hear what's going on around me. (Of course, I can blot out everything by just turning up my volume to max, but I digress.)

On top of the functionality of these things for runners, these are the most comfortable listening devices I have ever attached to my head.

Is there a way to let the governing board which made this stupid rules about such devices?

I agree somuch CoS! I have been using AirDrives since a friend told me about them last spring and have though many times that these should be exempted from the ban.

The fact that the outside-the-ear pieces are malleable are a HUGE plus because I have never yet met anyone who has a "standard" ear. :)

I can't plug this product enuff. I got my running club using them and THEY love them too.

When I went to their site I opted to take the survey and got free shipping too.

I had no idea they were this popular. I have been using them for a few months now, but I never read about them in a running mag or online. I found them only after a race in S.F. was recommended them.

I have never been so happy with a headset in my life!

I haven't raced in a couple of years - so I don't know how strict race directors are on "no ipod" rules.  I am going to get back into racing this winter and it does concern me.  I always run with an ipod.  The real reason is so I don't hear and try to control my breathing.  I guess I am strange that way.  I want to run the Columbus this fall - so I need to know what I am looking at!!!

clicky, I would agree with you. without the music I start focusing my breathing way too much, or I get stressed out if I can hear myself breathing really hard. the music is a welcome distraction. especially if you are really pushing yourself. If I'm gonna go slow then it's not a problem, but if I'm goning to get my BQ then I have to have music. and on top of that I have to have my music. not just anything will distract from marathon pains.
