Breakfast cereal

Are breakfast cereals bad for us? Are we better just eating porridge?

Most cereals are pretty bad and are full of sugar. I think porridge is the best of the lot and is a good value breakfast that fills you up.

I think shredded wheat are pretty much the best of the bunch  - they're pretty low in fat and sugar.

A lot of breakfast cereals are full of hidden fats and sugars, if they aren't then they tend to be tasteless like bran flakes or shredded wheat. Porridge is one of the more natural breakfasts, proper porridge oats haven't been messed around with as much as refined or processed cereal.

I used to be quite fond of cocopops and honeynut cornflakes (still am actually!), but they're definitely not good and I haven't had them for well over a year now. Used to nick them off the OH until he decided porridge was better!

Scares me that they advertise the worst cereals at kids!

I have Oatibix which is pretty much just oats with a little bit of salt and sugar. I have never enjoyed sugary cereals really -I like plain food first thing, so all-bran, shreaded wheat and bran flakes are all my cup of tea. Although, if Chocolate Crunchy Nut Clusters make it into the house I am a sucker for a big bowl of them!

Oatibix is one of the better choices, but you may be best steering clear of all-bran and bran flakes if you're cutting down on sugar - a study by Which magazine found they had some of the highest levels of sugar. Bran flakes are apparently 22% sugar!

In that case, the companies who sell bran flakes need a medal for making something so high in sugar taste so awful!! Ick!

I quite like them but seeing as they're so high in sugar I may as well have a nicer cereal such as crunchy nut clusters!

I love crunchy nut, how do they make them taste so good. But, if it's down to a chocolate brownie or a bowl of crunchy nuts i think i'd prefer the brownie. Porridge can be pretty good too. Does anyone have a really good porridge recipe? I tend just to add honey.

Crunchy nut clusters are definitely the nicest cereal of all time! Don't even want to think about how bad they are for me...

I don't dare try them, I could eat honey nut cornflakes by the boxful as it is, I'd be scared of obesity if I liked the crunchy nut clusters! haha

They are an absolute rip off, they're something like £4 a box and don't even last long. I'm a weetabix man myself, filling, cheap and not too unhealthy Cool

I love curiously cinnamon grahams - could easily eat them all day long, pretty sure they're not very good though, but don't really want to ruin them by finding out.

These kinds of cereals are expensive and don't last long, I agree, but as a treat for the weekend they're great -I normally have better value and healthier cereal such as porridge or oatibix day to day.

I'm like you Rachel_Amy, I like to have a bit of a treat cereal at the weekend or some crumpets or hot scones

Posted 23.01.12, 5:06pm

Weekend breakfasts are designed for treats! My dad only has bacon at the weekend and my mum has jammy toast! It's always a nice treat to have croissants but this doesn't happen very often- I wish I lived in France and had a bakery delivery on Sunday mornings!

I don't tend to eat much differently at the weekend, I vary my breakfastsn day-to-day anyway depending on mood. It's much easier to do a cooked breakfast or something a bit more luxury because of the time though!

Posted 24.01.12, 12:53pm

I think that's why I tend to eat differently at the weekend, I can get up and go to the shops to get something I fancy on the day, rather than the normal weekday rush

Posted 24.01.12, 4:57pm

I always treat myself at the weekends (nothing too majorly bad), but I do like having crumpets with lots of butter in the mornings.

Posted 25.01.12, 11:48am

I tend to eat nicer food at the weekends, but generally of an evening - I often skip breakfast as I get up late!
