Hi,

Does anyone have any tips on who to actually cook tofu properly. I have now gone through many packets of the stuff and followed many recipes and ended up chucking the lot in the bin as it is not eatable.

Please Help

I think tofu can be a bit bland so the best way I've found to cook it is to marinate it first. Try cutting it into squares and marinating it in soya sauce for a couple of hours, then fry it for a few minutes on each side. I've heard that dry-frying without olive oil is best as tofu is already quite moist so the idea is to reduce some of the moisture and crisp it up a bit.

You can also buy tofu that has already been marinated in soy sauce or smoked tofu, which I think are nicer than regular tofu.

I think i might try the pre-marinated tofu, what do you eat it with?

yeah I'd recommend that- the other stuff is vile!

I have tried it in several recipes but it just tastes like a lump of rubber, the smoked stuff is marginally better than the plain but still not one of my favourites.

I don't think I've ever met anyone, vegetarian or not, who actually likes tofu! I've never tried it but if I do I'll probably try the marinating technique

Hi guys since moving to China I regularly eat tofu as they make some delicious hot dishes with it. I failed to cook with it in the UK also.

My favourite is Chinese dish is mala tofu which is really spicy - there's a recipe for it here http://appetiteforchina.com/recipes/mapo-doufu-mapo-tofu there is pork/beef served with this here but you can just remove that from the recipe if you want it to be veggy.

Highly recommended!

I tried doing something with tofu a couple of weeks ago (mainly just out of curiosity) and it definitely benefits from having some flavour added to it, either marinaded or whatever. One thing I found, though, is that tofu tends to be very "wet" (at least the stuff I got) so to dry it out first, I put it between some kitchen towels with a plate on top to squeeze the water out of it, then microwaved it in soy sauce. I believe there are tofu presses to do the same, but that was going a bit too far just for an experiment.

I've got a block of tofu in the fridge at the moment, but I don't really know what I'm going to do with it - maybe stick some posters up on the wall? (I'm a bit short of Blu-tac...)

This sounds really good, have to give it a go. Is tofu a healthy food?

Been veggie forever, tried tofu in many ways, still think it tastes like wet rubber with a very similar texture! Its easy in the UK as quorn or similar is easy to get so I don't make any effort to cook it.  I am going to try some of the tips of here to see if I can actually have a decent tofu experience so thanks!!
