Hey everyone! I know there's no music (headphones, iPods, etc.) allowed for the marathon and half, but does the rule apply to the 5K as well? I have run 5Ks without music before, but I prefer to have it, if possible. I never turn it on until after the first 1/4 mile or so, once the crowd "evens out".
Happy running,

cripes, are they really going to enforce this??
You know, people have been running marathons far longer than mp3 players have been around and they always did just fine. I know, I enjoy my mp3 player as much as the next runner, but can't you go without it for one run, just for the sake of playing by the rules? IMO, music will only impare your ability to enjoy the race. I don't think I could stand to have it. There's so much going on all around you: people cheering, bands playing, chatting with other runners, thanking volunteers, high-fiving kids, enjoying the many sites, etc. Why would you want to drown all that out with headphones? When I was running the half marathon last year, I was having such a good time I kept forgetting to check my watch when I passed mile markers. Ended up finishing way ahead of my goal!! Anyhow, not looking down on people who race with earphones, I'm just saying you might be cheating yourself if you do.
The same rule was in place last year but race organizers said they wouldn't enforce the rule except in those cases in which there was a protest. So, unless you plan to finish in the top three, or have the unfortunate luck of finishing next to a whiner, you'll be OK. I ran with my iPod last year and plan to do the same in the half this year. (I'm not going to push my luck, though, a month later at Grandma's.)

Totally agree...nothing against those who choose to run with music, but you are depriving yourself of an amazing experience. Hundreds of people lining the streets are not there just to hear themselves clap and cheer--they're doing it for YOU! Think about it.

:? Yes, I said in my original post that of course I can run without music - I was just being curious. I've heard the Fargo race is much more fun than the 5Ks I've participated in before; I've never had race entertainment and an actual crowd! So, forgive me, I'm not used to anything but scenery during races, and I have relied on my music to push me through.
Sounds like Fargo is the perfect place to go without music! Thanks for everyone's replies.
