Too young to be a Premiership ref?

Weather permitting, Michael Oliver will become the youngest referee in Premier League history when he takes charge of Fulham's home game against Portsmouth on Saturday at the age of 24. Do you think this is too young for a Premiership ref and will he be able to command respect? (not that any of the others seem to these days)

It shouldn't be about age, it should be about ability. If he's good enough then he's old enough. Some of the older Prem refs don't seem to be up to the task so maybe its time to let the younger fitter guys who can keep up with the play better have a go.

The standard of refereeing hasn't really got worse. It's just that everything is being scrutinised to such a level that they are being made to look worse. Years ago, not all top flight games were even recorded for TV, so lots of incidents went unnoticed. Now the ref is under the microscope to such a degree that you have to wonder why any 24-year-old would want the stress and hassle.

You have to wonder why former players never opt to become refs. Must be because they know how hard it is and that it is just not worth the grief. Have any former pros ever gone on to become top flights referees?

So how long is it going to be before a female ref takes charge of a Premiership match? I wrote in my blog yesterday about how a woman took charge of a Football League game. Is it about time women were given charge of Premiership matches?

Clearly, if they can keep up with the pace of the game, there's no reason why women shouldn't ref in the Premiership. Surely they can't do much worse than many of the current lot? To be fair refs are under that much scrutiny that every decision seems to be questioned from every angle.

I know I keep carping on about it, but you simply don't have this issue in Rugby!. I think the Footballers generally have no respect for the officials and will question most every call the ref makes?...The difference is that as a young Rugby player, you are taught that the ref's decision is final and if you argue/oppose it with him, you will be sent off for descent!. Which also carries an instant 4 match/1 month ban. Surely it has to be focussed on the players more?...After all, the rules quite clearly state that the referee can only make a decision based on what he/they actually see, not what everyone else might see (or think they see)??....Also I don't think any age is too young if you're good enough~
