Greetings skywatching runners!
No doubt you are taking your mind off Steamtown by wondering where the space junk will land tonight. Well, wonder no more wondering runner! In the past six weeks, Northeast PA has endured an earthqauke, a hurricane, devastating floods and today, torrential rain and more flooding.
Where is the space junk going to land? On the finish line of The Steamtown Marathon of course.
Here is this week's update:
Mini Poster - I am pleased to report that we will have a nice Steamtown mini-poster again this year. The poster will be available for free at the race expo and the pasta party. Unfortunately, we will not be mailing any after the race.
A special salute goes to alert local runner and race organizer Lou Ciampi Jr., whose firm, Independent Graphics, is donating the printing for the poster. Two weeks ago, Independent Graphics was under 5 feet of flood water but Lou was detemined not to let our runners down and will be printing them in temporary space (donated by another printer). Another good example that we eat nails and spit rust in Northeast PA. Please consider using Independent Graphics should you have any commercial printing needs while you are in town to run Steamtown.
Volunteers - we are in need of some volunteers to help at the race expo and with race day traffic control. Volunteers will receive a free, vibrant, obnoxiously green, Steamtown Marathon T-shirt (it's a t-shirt and a night light!). Traffic controllers must be at least 18 and be able to stare down Stella Grumpheimer who "has to get through this intersection right now to get my bran muffins. They keep me regular you know!"
Please have volunteers send me an e-mail at racecommittee@hotmail.com and I will get them matched up with our committee chairs.
Gu/Gels - Unfortunately, we will not have GU or gels at our aid stations. Please carry your own.
Stranded Runner - Registered runner Karen S. is in a bind. Her running partner has bowed out of Steamtown and she doesn't have a ride to our race. She lives in the Doylestown/New Hope, PA area. If you can give her a ride, please send me an e-mail and I will get you her contact info. I hear she sings a wicked, "99 bottles of AllSport on the wall."
Post Race Party - we'll have a very nice post race party from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Byron Center on the campus of the University of Scranton. The party is free to runners, their families, and our volunteers. I like to attend to see if sore legged runners can still "move like Jagger" while they are arm dancing.
That's it for tonight. Only a few weeks to go. Please try not to hurt yourself. Anchor, tether, latch and taper, taper, taper!
Sincerely,
Jim "Yes, We have Space Junk Insurance" Cummings
Asst. Race Director
