Planning a trip to New York -potentially May/June. Wondering where was the best district to stay. I"ve picked upa few brochures but the choice is overwhelming. Would like to find somewhere not overpriced but centrally located to the majority of attractions that a first time visitor would choose. Where did any of you stay?

get out of the tourist mayhem and head over to Brooklyn or north to Harlem. That's real NYC where you'll meet some seriously mean locals not just tourists!

I think I stayed in the Hi Hostel New York - pretty cheap, quite a good location, and didn't take us long to get to places. They offered a free walking tour of Central Park which was really good!

New York never struck me as a hostel town. Funny what years of romantic dramatisation can do to indoctrinate you really!

Yeah, not sure how many there are about thought?! The Hi's a pretty popular one. What was your friend apartment on 5th Avenue like?

I'd love to go to New York one day but I think I'd be walking around like I was on a film set. I'm a massive Sex & the City fan so my trip would probably revolve around that!

It's on my top 3 places to go of all time, I'd love to live there for a year or so.

Oh yeah you'd have to visit Central Perk etc, just as a tribute to the good ol' '90s! :-) 'I'll be there for yoouuu' lalala

My parents used to live in Stamford, Connecticut about an hours train journey north of NYC in New England. We stayed there for a while and although fairly quite it is lovely. You can get to all sorts of wonderful places from here and they hold the 2nd largest Thanks Giving Parade there (after NYC) in Stamford. Greenwich is also nearby and Cove Island is lovely too (my profile pic is at Cove Island :))

Ah that all sounds great, I would have to venture out of the city in that case

I don't watch Sex and the City, but I'd like to see some of the places from Friends. And Gossip Girl!

I saw the apartment block from friends, but didn't see Central Perk... is there a central perk?
