Has anyone ever worked in an American camp? I wish we'd had places like that over in the UK when I was younger, they looked brilliant to go to (Bug Juice looked amazing!)

I always wanted to work on a Fat Camp in America, I was really interested on how they approached tackling weight loss in this way. I would imagine there will be more in the UK in the next few years too.

I wished we'd had camps like that over here - although we'd don't really have good summer weather for it?! It'd been great to have done a bit more over the Summer Holidays

Apparently they do have them over here, there's some run by a company called Camp Beaumont and a company called Wellspring run things which sound quite similar to fat camps. Not sure about fat camps, I would imagine a lot of people put all the weight back on as soon as they leave, and you read about others having massive body hangups and weight issues for life. I reckon it needs to be handled more sensitively than sending someone of that age to a fat camp, which might seem a bit like a punishment for being fat!

No one ever been on a PGL camp in the UK? I went on a few when I was younger, was great fun. Don't think there was any of the cheesy camp America stuff with us Brits though Surprised ooo I say!

Yeah I went to PGL. Was great. The one I went to had an activity devoted to wading through trenches filled with mud. No rhyme or reason, just get as muddy as possible and then compare the level of dirt with your friends.

Our school went to PGL but I was the only one in the year to opt out... kind of glad if it involves wading through trenches, can't quite picture me enjoying being knee deep in mud! Smile

They have just set up a Fat camp for adults - too I read about it but can't remember if it is in the UK or USA?

Is that like a boot camp? I've been reading about a few and you're meant to lose a fair bit in a week!

Posted 12.04.11, 1:04pm

I'm not sure I could handle a boot camp! They seem to get really great results, but I reckon I'm too lazy, and I don't like being shouted at either!

Posted 13.04.11, 6:14pm

I think I'd quite like it - quick results are always nice!

Posted 14.04.11, 8:15pm

True, but do you reckon the results last? I imagine loads of people would leave the bootcamp and put on weight/lose their fitness levels pretty quick.

Posted 18.04.11, 5:25pm

I don't know - I hope it would. If you're determined to keep it off it might be a good start and hopefully get you into some good health and nutrition routines.

Yeah I reckon a bootcamp would be a great kickstart to get into healthy eating and fitness! I reckon once you've seen the results you're going to want to stay that way.

Definitely - I think I'll need it after Easter - roll on the chocolate - nom nom!

Posted 21.04.11, 7:00pm

Yup... could definitely do with going after this weekend!

I wonder if it can be really healthy to lose so much so quick? I don't know, just a thought. They always say slow and consistent is best with weight loss don't they?

I don't know, but it's probably better to lose it through exercise than diet? And I imagine if you keep it off the benefits outweigh any bad stuff.

I agree. I feel as though dieting by itself is just a long, painful and boring solution to losing weight. You can't really substitute it for a regular fitness regime. If you exercise well, eat well, then you can afford to treat yourself. My personal choices, the odd beer and chocolate!

And in terms of the American Camp thing, 5 year veteran heading out in the next week or two!

I'm the opposite, I prefer to eat well so I can be relatively lazy! Good luck in America, bet you're looking forward to getting back out there!
