Flying in the US

I don't think I would want to be flying in the US at the moment...has anyone seen the new TSA security procedures!?

If you opt out of the new scanner that produces images of your naked body, you have to get a very intrusive pat down (or touch up) Embarassed.

Some people may prefer the latter. The nearest thing they get to being touched up for some of them.

Not the best start to a holiday- but if it makes flying safer I'm all for it.

That's kind of the problem I guess...it shouldn't make much of a difference...the old machines and sniffer dogs etc are no less sensitive. Your flight isn't going to be any safer but they will have some nice holiday snaps of you.

I want tried soaring/gliding recently. It's pretty expensive though so I'm not usre whether I'm going to pursue it long term. Thinking about doing the FAST a course. Includes a bit of tuition on the controls. Anyone else tries it?

Eh? Undecided

Now you need to be fingerprinted as well? Is that right?

Wow, seems like a much more complicated (and intrusive) process than when I flew to the US two years ago! When I went I don't remember it being that much different from getting a flight anywhere within Europe

Last time I went I was fingerprinted, photographed and think I had a picture of my eye taken too. But I guess you have to go through it don't you?

Last time I went they were scanning everyone's eye and fingers, it doesn't bother me in the slightest, in fact I find it reassuring, I'm not sure how effective the measures are though.  On an internal flight I recall there was one guy on the flight who must have been an undercover officer as he knew all of the crew and was looking about all of the time.  Not very undercover thinking about it, but reassuring nonetheless!

Yeah America is the strictest place I've been to. I'm all for it - the more safety precautions the better really.

it is ridiculous how long you have to wait at customs when you get there...obviously it is better that they are taking more precautions.

It can take a fair while, but I quite like being in the airport, I'm either excited about the holiday, and the airport means I'm nearly there, or just getting back and it's usually a fair bit quicker on the way home. Whilst precautions can extend your time there, I'd rather they do them!

AIRPORT ANGER .......I don't mind procedures for safety but I can't bear taking shoes, jackets, belts off and all that rigmorole. Plus the faff of opening your bag, getting your laptop out of the case, putting it in a seperate tray. It's the other people that annoy me too. They don't wait for their stuff to come through the scanner. They start packing their bags again and putting all their clothes on at the middle of the conveyor belt just where you are about to walk through the scanner passageway! They cause all this congestion because they're in a panic to pick up their stuff. WHY?! Do they think someone else is gonna take it. Well for a start you're surrounded by cameras and airport security so a stealth op would be mission impossible but quite frankly no one wants their **** cheap holdall with a few cosmetics or their ugly shoes! Talk about wind me up. I flew from the US recently and every time the queue in front of me moved, the woman behind me got closer to me regardless of whether I'd actually even moved myself. Eventually when her nose was practically on my cheek I told her to back off or I'd lay her out. She looked shocked and said, "sorry dear." It was then I felt guilty to have shouted in airport anger at someone's granny. Am I bad?! in my defense she was REALLY annoying, it was 11pm in the evening and I hadn't had a glass of wine all day! Rant over :)

I definitely must have gone on a good (or bad??) day when I flew to the US. I basically turned up, showed my passport and walked through the scan thing. That was it. Having to take my shoes off and earrings out was about as intrusive as it got!

I wouldn't appreciate anyone getting that close to me either - it's just awkward!

All they did to me was took a pack of peanuts away from me.

I don't mind any safety precautions, no matter how long they take. If it makes air-travel safer then I'm all for it, I'm nervous enough about flying as it is, so increased safety is always a good thing!
