How do you cope with long-haul flights?

Will be experiencing a long-haul flight for the first time in years. How do you all cope on a long-haul? I never manage to sleep on a plane so I'll have to find other ways to cope.

You can fall asleep if you get it right. You will need:

  • Eye mask
  • Neck pillow
  • Ear plugs
  • Two glasses of wine with the dinner

Enjoy!

I've only ever been on one long-haul flight and (weirdly perhaps) I loved it! When I'm at home I always feel like I should be doing something and keeping busy, but when you're stuck on a plane there's not much choice but to just relax!

We took popcorn with us and watched loads of films (pretended we were in the cinema haha), I read a book, listened to my ipod, looked through my guide book about where I was going, and we played travel games... was lots of fun!

Films get me through - love watching them back to back!

I normally need time to digest a film, can't watch a whole bunch of different ones in a row. Unless they are just trashy comedies and the like.

They've only ever really played trashy comedies when I've been on long-haul flights! All easy viewing at any rate, never really come across any "thinkers" as yet.

Depending on the time of travelling I always opt for the few drinks option and then try to sleep for as many hours as possible. Ear plugs and eye mask is key to pulling this off.

Yeah im with you. Although I tend to drift onto neighbour's shoulders if I fall asleep.

I couldn't sleep in public, especially with an eye mask, I like to know what's going on around me!

Depends who your neighbour is on the flight. If it's some big bruiser then you could be in trouble even if you aren't aware what you are doing.

I quite like long-haul flights, catch up on a bit of reading, have a nap, watch some films. And since i'm not that tall leg space isn't a problem, although it's pretty annoying when the person in front puts their chair back - grrrrr!

Watch all the movies and TV shows, make sure I have a good stock of water, earplugs, blankets and my travel pillow - oh and an eyemask + a cheeky G&T.

This should be made illegal!! It's a pet peeve of mine too, it's not like there's much room to start with.  I'm with the sleepers, I get so bored otherwise, even after watching a couple of films, sleeping is the only way, which usually helps me get my sleeping pattern back to normal if I time it right...

I like long-haul flights too, it's a good excuse to take it easy and relax with a book and some films! But totally agree it's really annoying when the person in front puts the chair back, it shouldn't be allowed! Even worse when the kid behind is kicking your seat and the one in front keeps throwing toys at you... This happened on my most recent flight!

Long hauls don't bother me too much once I get settled in I'm normally happy as Larry. One thing I do hate is constant changes. Had some bad problems on the way from New Zealand to America. Had to stay over night in LA (whihc was fine free hotel woop) but then had to go to Chicago to transfer. Was bad. Got a nose bleed from all the pressure changes whcih was made worse by the fact I was sat next to really good looking girl who I was trying to pluck up the courage to talk to when the flood arrived! Sad times to quote Carly!

Last time I went on one I took a PSP and it worked perfectly to pass the time, as I had 2 films on it, some music and a game. The time flew by!

I hate them to be honest, the time goes by so slowly and I can never manage to fall asleep on them. I just have to hope they're showing some good films, and they never seem to be Frown

Love long haul if I have a day to recover at the other end. It's nice to have all that time to read and watch films. Haven't been on big flight for ages though.

Also for people who can't sleep, my Mum had that problem and bought an album of relaxing music designed to help you fall asleep, I will ask her what it was because it worked amazingly apparently!
