I want to run a 10K with my husband in a bid to lose weight and spend time together while we're training. Are there any in the North West of England or the Midlands?

That sounds like a great idea. There's the Bupa Great Manchester Run in the North West. Not sure about others but you could use the events calendar on here to look for some.

There's a lovely festive run in Knowsely Safari park, Merseyside. You dress up as reindeers! It's in December though, so possibly a little too soon. I think people say the ideal time you need to train for a 10k is 4 months if you're a beginner. Here's the link though if you feel up to it! http://race-calendar.com/rnli-reindeer-run-knowsley-safari-park-merseyside-uk-27th-november-2011/14068/

Also there's shorter distances if you don't feel ready for the full 10k.

This looks amazing! I want to run as a reindeer!! I'm not quite ready for a 10K but would love to do this as a 5K.

Yeah I think I am only 5K standard too

This sounds great! Loving the idea of dressing up as reindeers and I think this would be a really nice route to run.

The festive run in Knowsley Safari park sounds ace - they've got 3.5K and 5K runs too - more up my street than the 10K!

I'd love to do a 10K but not sure how much training will happen in the winter months - maybe will aim for one in the summer!

That event looks fun! How long do you think it would take to get ready for a 10K if you were already running (but only for a few months) and had completed a 5K?

Free entry to the safari park for all participants, I'm there Cool

Do you just run around the parts where the cars usually drive then?

Posted 22.10.11, 5:09pm

That's a good question, I don't know really... I suppose you can run through some of them but I wouldn't fancy running through the lion enclosure!

Oop never thought about that - I was picture fences in between, but obviously that's not the case in safari's! I wonder where you do run then? I can't imagine running that close to many of the animals would be that safe?!

I know, it seems odd, I checked the link and it definitely says you run through the Safari Park but I can't imagine it would be particularly safe! I don't fancy my changes of outrunning most of those animals!

Maybe you just run through the safer parts... It says the run is round Knowsley Hall as well so maybe only a small bit of it is in the Safari Park

Hi Folks Did this run last year on a BITTERLY cold day. The course is indeed through the safari Park but you don't go through any enclosures as such. The Lions and Monkeys would be just to tempted !!!!! The animals are kept away for the duration of the run and then released out again for you to drive through after the race and see them. The course is a little hilly and mostly on the driving paths although there are some parts on tracks and grass Think you will enjoy it and although it isn't a large field, there is a reasonable cross section of standards, I'm thinking of doing it again this year so may see you there.Tongue out

I did the 5k two years ago which was on the outskirts of the park.  Very muddy in some parts as across a large field.  It can be hilly as mentioned by radioman and I had not trained enough for it so ended up walking the hill at the end.  It is free into the park afterwards but wont be doing that again as a Lion atttacked my mini and was very scary (still got the stratches).  The park wardens came speeding down in their van to chase it away just before it jumped on the bonnet!!  Going to do the 10k this year as been doing alot more running and I feel I will enjoy it more.  It is very cold and rained when we did it.  Got a free bag with reindeers on and a drink of hot chocolate at the end.

A lion attacked your car! Sounds terrifying. I read about a man who did a marathon in Africa and there was a lion on the prowl after him, but helicopters partolled the course and scared it off. Lucky escape. I might see you there on the reindeer run, sounds good

I can't believe a lion attached your car - that sounds so scary! I'm not surprised you don't want to go back!
