Just curious if there is anyone out there who has done the Majors or trying to run them at some point?  Cool

Would like to but would never qualify for Boston!  Done London and doing NYC in November though.

You never know what will happen...Boston maybe in your future. :)  I have done Chicago and NYCM, London is next on my list....but I will have to wait until 2013....  :(  I'm hoping to qualify for Boston at some point....crossing my fingers in the next year if I stay injury free... :)

I have never really understood the Marathon majors thing. Its just a marketing tag thought up to promote those five races. As a general runner there is no "benefit" to running all five or not running them - completing them is more down to how much money you want to spend than anything else.

Would love to run NY and Boston, apparently they're as good as London for support / occasion - perhaps, even have a bit more history about them. Though this hasn't got much to do with them being majors. Though, I might never qualify for Boston.

Athens also seems like another road race that needs to be ticked off the list.

I agree that the majors are a big marketing tag to promote tourism to the cities and the events...etc.  However, but wouldn't any race be a marketing tag for that particular event?  Running is one of the least expensive sports around where all you need is a good pair of shoes and the open road, but people spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to participate in various events...

At any rate, I do consider myself a general runner and as a runner we all have reasons for running any particular race, and you're right there would be no "benefit" to me for the majors other than Boston.

Don't get me wrong I am sure all 5 are great races and may well be worth doing individually. Its just grouping them together and setting as a target these five arbitary races that always seems a bit odd to me. Its the 5 to "Do" the Marathon majors that I struggle with.

Why for example run NYC (great race) over say the MCM? Or London over Brighton? Or Berlin over Paris? Or Chicago over Las Vegas? May be great reasons to make each choice but clocking up all five wouldn't be up there on my decision list.

but definitely come over and do London you will love it.

There's probably a t-shirt you can get 'I've done the 5 majors' and if you wear it you can get free drinks in any of the cities. That would be cool. I've done London and Berlin and a couple of years ago I almost moved to the US. If I lived there I would try to give it a shot. Not up for making 3 seperate trips there just to run a marathon though.

I think you can buy a tourist place into Boston can't you?

Oh yes, I completely agree...no one race is better than the other.  Boston in my opinion would be the only event that would be different in that the level of competition is so much higher....

And of course I am using running London or Berlin as an excuse to go across the pond..not that I would really need one.  :)

I think it would be funny if there was a shirt that says "i've done the majors."  I know here in the states many race organizations will have "triple crown" events where they will organize 3 seperate races through the year and if you do all three you get an extra medal.  I have only done such thing, but it was more for the challenge of the course than the special medal.  :)

As for free drinks, I think just wearing your marathon medal around town would warrant free drinks....  :)

Do London, it's brilliant. There was a guy from the US, who joined the forum last year before running it. I think it was the Running For My Life bloke or some such and he was overwhelmed by the atomosphere - especially of runners, who are giving it a go - over here.

He came to the Buzzer picnic too with his wife, great guy!

yes, London 2013 is the plan for next spring.  :)  I have not been to Europe in several years and it would be a nice way to see London again. :)

I have done all five majors and it is definatley worth it.

I am a general runner who only started five years ago( i had to do a marathon befor I was 50 i was 49) and got hooked it is about the races as they are the biggest apart from Boston.

Ive loved the travel and the races but i have to say my fastest races have been the others i have done.

Interesting - but did you do all five to "DO" the majors (ie get the T shirt saying you have done all five) or because each of them was individually a great race to run? What was the point in other words

I think the debate is more about if its wrth doing all five simply to do the "Majors" which IMO is just a marketing ploy rather than if each is or isnt  a great race.

You're nobody in my book if you haven't done Bungay Money mouth
