Missed my long run

So because of the snow here in Kent ive not managed my long yet today. I was due to do 1 hr 30 today at a slow pace. So question is should I attempt it after todays football in the snow and ice or should i adjust my plan for this coming week and do the lng run in the gym tomorrow night.Monday's workout was going to be interval training.

Ask yourself this, what would you have done if you'd been training for the marathon last winter when there was snow on and off for two months? At this stage, snow is not a reason not to run. I loved running in it last winter!! You can get some yaktrax for your shoes that will stop you from slipping if you're worried about your footing.

Alternatively you need to find an treadmill at a gym somewhere and do your long run on that.

Obviously you don't want to risk slipping but I find it's much easier to run in snow than walk in it.

I wasn't training for the marathon last year so didnt apply to me. Can't get any yaktrax today otherwise Id be out now. Gym is 5 miles away and as Ive had my licence taken away from me for medical reasons I cant drive there to run on a treadmill.

I may risk it outside but at this stage dont want to pick up a twisted ankle or something.

I guess my question was more based around as ive missed today should i fit it in tomorrow or jst crack on with the plan as it is?

I planned ahead and did a 20 miler on Thursday night as they forecasted heavy snow for Essex. Training plans can be juggled around as long as you get your long run in at some point in the week. Maybe do a short one tonight and a long one say Tuesday when the snow has thawed out a bit?

I think I'd love to run in the snow, sadly Merseyside seems to be the only place in ENgland to have avoided snow.  Instead lots of sleet/icy rain yesterday which made the pavements fairly slippy today but generally good fun.

Do as Roundrachel says and get some of that stuff (never heard of it myself and will get some just in case there's anything to come).  Others probably adjust your days a bit, not ideal but I think at this stage to miss a long run would be a bit of a shame whereas you can probably afford to forego one of your other shorter runs if you can't do an extra run in this next week.

I'm no expert though!

If this was first long run missed then I would just carry on with plan as set from tomorrow rather than jiggle it around. If you have missed a few then I would rejig.

Why didn't you do you long run in the gym today? Or why were you happy to play football in the ice, but not run? I must be missing something but anyway, if it was me I'd do it tomorrow one way or the other coz I hate missing long runs. In London this morning it wasn't too bad, slushy but not too slippy so I decided to go for it and I'm really happy I did. I somehow managed 20 miles at a faster pace than I did 18 two weeks ago even though I was being cautious. I'll be enjoying my rest day tomorrow Cool

I live in a rural place so no gritters and very deep drifts, not many compacted path ways, gym is 5 miles aay and i dont drive so couldnt get there. didnt play football???

It is my first long run, was planning to do 1.2 hr slowly. I may just do it tomorrow on the treadmill (as I have a lift there) then carry on with the plan as normal.

Same here the freaky freezing rain.  Luckily today was just lovely and sunny but nice and cold. Well done, weather!

Ah, you meant after watching the football....

I've always avoided running in the snow in previous years, I think it's a very good reason not to run, at any stage, because a large amount of uncertainty is introduced, I've never heard of yaktrax before but I guess they're not going to stop you falling into a drift. I'm normally pretty good on a treadmill, I can go for ages just daydreaming about stuff but on the few occasions i've tried to do 2.5 hours plus, I've always fallen short of my target so I thought that would probably happen again if I tried it today. So i went up and down the street a few times to see what it was like and I thought it would be safe enough if I was careful. But obviously the situation is different all over the place. Anyway, I'm sure you'll be back on track soon enough.

are gym miles(treadmill and cross trainer) equivalent to road miles. i opted for gym today instead of snowy icy streets for fear of injury.

i managed 8mile each on cross trainer and treadmill(both programmed to random incline), was due to do 16mile, is it the same?

i also have never heard of yaktrax but may aquire some.

Treadmill miles are "different" but I would say equivalent to road miles (although muscles used slightly differently) but cross trainer/elliptical trainers are different and I would say are not equivalent. Static bikes also arent equivalent.

Only real way to judge equivalence for cardio is to wear a heart rate monitor and you would need heart rate to be at similar level for similar time.

I'm a first timer too, and had to miss my long run today as recovring from a stomach bug.  Very sick Friday and still not back to normal eating and energy levels, so going to get back to training hopefully Tuesday, but wont be trying to make up for lost time as I reckon this would be counter productive.

I know illness is different, but everything I have read stresses how one missed run is not the end of the world for your training.  If you try to do your run tomorrow or add extra miles to your training this week, you wont be as 'ready' for your long run next weekend.

Not sure I would have done the long run today if I was well as an injury like a twisted ankle now would be a disaster.

last year in the on and off snow I did a a few weeks worth of "runs" on my crosstrainer and although not equivalent I think it worked just as well.  I generally have it set on a high resistance and I think it actually helped with less impact on the joints and a similar motion to running I felt stronger when I got back on the road.  I also knocked 15 mins of my previous time. 

This year I treated myself to a treadmill and did my 14 miler on it yesterday (Im training for MK).  I found it hard and my time was not good but I did enjoy watching ghostbusters 2 whilst running!!!

I think it is hard to strictly stick to a training plan and you have to rejig things at times, as long as you maintain and build on your fitness/endurance doing something you will be alright!

Long run after 90 mins of football then following it up with interval training the very next day, am I understanding this right mashley?

Tomorrow, take your pick, do the intervals if you fancy them, do the long run if you fancy that, 1 missed run in a schedule like that isn't going to hurt you.

I'm a bit concerned though, that in the long term, following a schedule like that probably will hurt you. What is 90 mins of football if not 90 mins of intervals? I firmly believe it would be a healthier option for you to ditch interval training on a Monday. Either do your long slow run, or take it as a rest day if you do continue doing long runs after a football match.
