Well I'm going to regret this but here goes......

...I've run quite a few marathons to date - 8 so far this year. I did a particularly hard one just over a week ago - 12 laps on hard tarmac. I hate hard flat tarmac runs BTW but I bust my ass to try ang get a GFA but missed out by just over a minute. I have come close on two other occasions this year.

All was fine on the day, apart from being knackered....but I then developed a pain just above my right ankle and slightly on the front of my right shin. I didn't run at all last week but decided it would be a good idea to do a very muddy, very slippy 5 miles league run yesterday...and yes....I fell over and did my hamstring some minor damage on my left leg. I think I was running squew wiff and that's what caused it.

So, as we all do - self diagnosis. I think I either have a stress fractor or shin splints. I'm hoping it is not the former. Have booked docs appt for end of next week to maybe get a referall to have an x-ray. Am hoping it will be o.k. by then and will be shin splints so won't go to doc.

I have been wearing flat shoes all day at work which was crap....put some comfy wedges on when I got home and boy, so much better.

Have been massaging lotions and potions into tender area (my leg BTW !!) and just hoping and praying it will subside. I'm a tough old thing I am but am not completely stupid despite what some say.

So, anyone out there have experience of either ?????

Am not looking for someone to wave a magic wand as it is all self inflicted, just want to share the pain if I may.  Foot in mouth

Sorry to hear about your woes Nu. Rest is probably the best solution. I can only guess that Flanker is away or I am sure he would have been on with an offer of a "Hands on " remedy !!!!!Wink

Thx Radioman - I'm that desperate I'd even let Flanks lay his hands on me........LOL.  Wink

Hi sounds a bit odd but most people who think they have stress fractures don't.

Think good old RICE for a week or so and see what its like after is probably order of day. You have run more this year than probably ever at least in marathons so its prob only body saying too much!

Hope it clears up soon.

Keith

Thanks Keith - I did kind of think I was expecting the worst with stress fracture.....was reading up more on stuff today and yes, am giving the old RICE a go now. My next marathon is 12th August and I just do not want to miss that one as it is a lovely crtoss country one, my fav kind.  Foot in mouth

Did someone say Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1? Sealed

LOL.....yes indeedy. Lovely run and did it in 2010. Quite tough and hilly with a bizarre finish through the shopping streets of Salisbury itself, dodging the tourists rubbernecking the cathedral.  Cool

Not sure if you mean me or Keith.....if me, I did most certainly enjoy Boddington but the hard road run is what knackered my leggie. Will go back to it next year as very well organised, good hardy supporters en route to cheer you on and lots of friendly runners ready to offer encouragement as you schlepped around the 11 and a bit laps. Could see why last year lots dropped out as if the weather had been hot, it would have been very tiresome. Luckily great weather this year for a run of that kind. Fantastic...and coming first in my category helped....altho I was the only one in my category.....lol. Cool

...and sciatica........bloody awful that is.  Foot in mouth

Sciatica only effects old people...!!!!!Kiss....and by the way,,,many - many -  women (and quite a few men) have benefited from the magic touch of these hands...Tongue out.....happy to help out if I can...actually, I've been running much less lately as really busy, but I have been really feeling it on my shins and feet which is unusual for me. I use Arnica massage balm (as I'm sure you know) before and after Nu-Nu, which really helps with the swelling/bruising, but if you have a proper injury best get it checked out to be on the safe side. You can't take any chances at your age..!!Wink~

NuNu - Be afraid. Be VERY afraid. Flanker has given you sensible advice - and not even a mantion of your puppies !!!! He's after something 1!!Wink

Or if you suffer from Arthritis that flares up now and then! :-( No magic hands required.....just more drugs (of the prescription variety.....of course!).
