As in Merry Old Soul, like Old King Cole?

Like all injuries, manage it and dont massage an inflammed achilles as this tends to aggrevate the pain.

Sorry Rosie, I respectfully disagree: I believe injuries should be treated until you get rid of them, rather than managed.  I also believe in finding the cause to avoid future injuries.

Laurent, I agree with you wholeheartedly. Always treat injuries and always try to get rid of them. But, 99.9% of us on here are not elite athletes and we have a daily work/life routine which means we have to manage injuries in order to carry on with our daily lives. We dont have unlimited access to specialiast treatment on tap so to speak.

I snapped my achilles tendon back end of last year - 7 weeks rest 5 of which complete other than swimming, then slowly increase cycling, before commencing running, best to start running again on grass, as softer impact than the road, (also good for increasing speed and the softer and wetter the grass, you seem to run quicker when back on road!)being careful how you put your foot on the pedal - you then ease yourself back in. You have to rest - if untreated it can fuse and turn to bone, and need operating ouch!

Need ultrasound if you can get it - ice and then finally when swelling has gone heat, Tip ice your ankle for 20 mins to reduce inflamation then apply ibroprufen gel to area.

A sports therapist can feel along the tendon and if any ruptures can massage them out, once all swelling subsided ,usually only a few sessions needed, and if they arent removed they can turn to bone and fuse which is pretty nasty! and the pain would be far worse!!)

Before a run put your ankle on a hot water bottle, (covered in a towl) for 10 mins to get the blood supply flowing to the area, then when you get back home, put your foot on ice for damage limitation.  Ankle supports dont really do anything, except if you get the right type can apply and keep heat to the area, but they can irritate on longer runs! (NB- if there is any swelling though, DO NOT USE HEAT TREATMENT)

Good luck and hope it helps - no how you feel, after my incident last year, im still really wary and nervous about damaging the area again!
