Best weight loss advice

What are your best tips for losing weight and keeping it off?  Aside from the obvious (healthy balanced diet and regular exercise) is there any other advice anyone can offer to shift weight when you find you've reached a plateau.

I myself reached the plateau... the only advice I have been given or been able to find was to increase the amount of exercise. Let's say if you run, you should increase the running so that the body doesn't get used to the intensity of the exercise. Change the type of exercise you are doing, or lift heavier weight. Depending how often do you exercise at this moment.

I know this will sound as cliché, but simple formula is: the amount of calories you get in should be less than the amount of calories you spent exercising.
Good luck! Motivation is the key to survive to plateau. Wink

Well my best advice is to have a walk of 45 minutes daily and get your body in shape nothing else.

I find the best thing is to move more, walk as much as possible, and everything you do, do it with vigour.

I eat a large breakfast, then eat little and often for the rest of the day

Everything in moderation
Eat little and often, it keeps your blood sugar stable

If you can keep your blood sugars stable (cut out refined/processed foods, refined carbs and sugars) and your stomach satisfied, you'll find it's not too difficult to lose/maintain your weight. It also makes it easier to restrain from the unhealthy snacks!!

Also, never shop hungry. It's a dieters nightmare as you're guaranteed to buy things you wouldn't normally buy!!

I always try never to take the easy way out. Always take the stairs instead of a lift, when on escalators walk up them rather than standing idle, walk to the shops rather than driving - all these things make a difference.

I do not keep sweets at home. I can eat them rarely at a caffee or visiting friends, but at home - never.

So how did you lose weight slimbeauty?

Eat less, exercise more - sounds simple but we find it so hard to do.

drink more water... it makes a massive difference!

Always have a drink with your meal. It ensures that you feel fuller than you other wise might have been.

Hunger is only disguised thirst. Drink litre of water and the hunger is gone.....SurprisedSmileWink

I don't think so. As long as you're well hydrated, it's pretty easy to tell the difference between 'Hunger' and 'Thirst'.

Hunger comes from the stomach and water definitely doesn't satiate it.
Thirst is felt in the mouth and water will satiate it.

Drinking a glass of water before a meal can help you be more aware of over-eating, but if you're hungry, no amount of water will fill you up.

I always snack on fruit between meals to prevent gorging myself at meal times. I must have at least 3 bananas a day plus other fruit.

his is another diet myth based on the premise that if you don’t eat, you will lose weight. This can actually be harmful to your body. Your body stores sugar molecules which have been converted to glycogen in the liver and muscle tissue. When you skip a meal, your body uses these stores and when they are gone, your body will find other nutrient sources for energy. Protein breakdown can occur because your body shifts into a “fasting” metabolism. This is not a good method to achieve weight loss.

I lost quite a bit of weight last Spring, through running and dieting; eating ~1400 calories during the week (being less strict at the weekend). Over the summer and winter, I got lazy and put it all back on plus some more.  I've been running regularly since the beginning of the year and over the last month, I've increased my distance so my longest run is now around 7 - 8 miles. Also watching my diet, again coming in around 1400 calories most days.  Somehow, I'm not losing weight tho and it's beginning to depress me a bit. My husband says I look slimmer and my clothes feel better, but last week I gained around three pounds, after a 8 mile run.

Any ideas what could be going on please? I know I'm probably building muscle and it weighs more than fat, but from what the scales are saying, I don't appear to be burning any fat!

treezy, i know exactly how you feel. I am  trying to do the exact same thing! My longest run is 10 miles at the moment, increasing to 13 this week, and i'm on the special k 2 week diet, am going well so far, 3rd day, although i had a little bit of chocolate today! Which i felt bad abut after so gonn have some fruit and my other bowl of special k later, then get back on the wagon tomorrow. So far... i've in theory lost 4 lbs. But i know weight can fluctuate that much so i'm gonna wait until the end of the 2 weeks to weigh myself again. My goal weight is 9st overall and im hoping to lose 2lbs ish a week until i get there so hopefully by the end of june i should be close :)

Probably not a bad thing to have the chocolate - its when people come off the 'calorie controlled' and go back on 'full rations' - with all the chocolate and whatever that the weight goes back on. Best way to lose weight and keep it off is to do so slowly.

Try eating a bit more Treezy, 8 miles is quite substantial and 1,400 calories is unlikely to be a high enough intake on those days. Try sticking to 1,500-ish calories day-to-day and an extra couple hundred when you're exercising.

Increase with healthy foods like bananans/porridge/nuts/seeds and see if it helps over a couple of weeks. Bodies are far too efficient and if you're not feeding them properly but still working out, it's more difficult to lose fat. Eat plenty.

Do you retain water? It can make you weigh in heavier or look more swollen than you are.
