I do kind of fancy running this one. Have yet to run a 10k yet though so first things first! If I run a 10k in May and it goes well hopefully I'll be inspired to go on and part of me fancies running New York. Berlin appeals as well though. Hmmm, we'll see...

Hi chef, when is that in may?

I ran New York five years ago, six weeks after 9/11. My first marathon, and quite hard (lots of bridges and bit hilly especially near the end) but crowds were great and nothing beats the start on the top layer of the Verazano Narrows Bridge with that amazing view across the Hudson to Manhatten (even without the Twin Towers) and the fire ships on the river setting off their water fountains. Fantastic. Plus you get to safely run through a part of NY you wouldn't normally get to see (The Bronx I think). Although it is traditionally a slower run than most of the others and the jet lag was horrendous the high it gave me took five years to wear off, hence my decision to run FLM07 (you can only dine out on one marathon for so long!)

forgot to add, take it from one who knows.... training for this is much nicer as you train over the spring and summer. I lost loads of weight, whereas for FLM07 I didnt cos it was cold wet or miserable and I needed my food!

The atmosphere must have been a great and a bit weird at the same time six weeks after 9/11. Sounds like an excellent race though.

i ran it 3 years ago and you can't beat the summer training versus London training. It makes a real difference to be able to train on long summer nights!

great race but that early morning start is tricky. Worth the effort though!

it is definitely worth the effort! I have done a lot of NYC marathons and wouldn't miss it for the world!

I guess that means you can have more of the rest of the day off after you've finished! :D

It is a fab race but Bazz is right. The early start is a bummer, it really is early coz you have to be bussed on mass to the start and there's a lot of hanging about. both ends But I was two minutes off the official start time, unlike FLM where I was 10 mins, so the start is definitely more efficient.

If you ever run with a camera this is the race to do it in. Great things to photograph everywhere!

Not sure how you would run with a camera....? Do you stop to take pics?

When does the ballot generally open for this marathon, and how hard is it to get a non-charity place? I can't seem to find the info anywhere and I've got a friend in NY I want to visit sometime!
