The latest craze in NYC is 'SLT' which stands for 'Strengthen, Lengthen, Tone,' It originated in LA under a different name and is a combination of cardio, strength training and the balance work of pilates.

Within the past several years the phrase “core” in the fitness arena has become increasingly popular. Exercise techniques, such as Pilates and yoga have exploded in health clubs. The latest on the scene is The Indo Board.
First used mainly by surfers as a means to cross-train, equipment consists of a board that rolls atop a cylinder or balances on a cushion. The object is to maintain balance on the board, which requires leg and core muscle strength.
Helps to increase balance and coordination, along with sculpting muscles and burning calories. The Indo Board is rapidly growing in recognition now being used in fitness classes across the country. For example, the Indo Board is used in Crunch classes that simulate snowboarding to help develop long, lean legs without exposure to the harsh cold and snow.

Have you ever pedaled on a stationary bike at the gym and
thought to yourself: ‘What if this energy I am exerting
could be used for something better than just making me sweat?” Well now a new proposal from architect Mitchell Joachim promises to take all that energy expended at the gym to the next level, by capturing all that exertion and using it to transport people around the rivers of New York City. The River Gym concept is a
human-powered floating gym that will provide the user with the one experience that no other gym can provide: floating your workout around Manhattan. Designed by architect Mitchell Joachim and personal trainer Douglas Joachim, this project could bring
inspiration to both the morning commute and workout.
The River Gyms are, in essence, floating gyms designed to provide health amenities while floating along the Hudson and East rivers. Each gym is programed with a specific path set on a
15 minute loop moving from one point to the next.
This means that each one of these devices can function both as a gym with a view and as a transportation system.
The design won the third place in New York Magazine‘s
2005 Create a Gym competition.Comments(1)

NEWS..........The Partnership for a Healthier America, together with First Lady Michelle Obama, announced today that Darden Restaurants, Inc., the world's largest full service restaurant company, has committed to improve the nutrition of its children's and full menus, increasing healthy choices for millions of its guests. Darden owns and operates approximately 1,900 restaurants in 49 states, serving more than 400 million meals per year. By July 2012, children's menus at Olive Garden, Red Lobster, LongHorn Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze will offer one percent milk as the default beverage and guarantee a fruit or vegetable as the default side for every kids' menu item at those restaurants offering a default side. All of Darden's brands, including Capital Grille and Seasons 52, will reduce its sodium and calorie footprint by 10 percent over five years and 20 percent over 10 years.

Some dieters say that eating less at one meal is ineffective, because people compensate by eating more at other meals.
Not so, according to a small study in the October issue of the
journal Appetite. In fact, eating one reduced-calorie meal a day,
and then eating what you want the rest of the day, may be
an effective weight-loss technique.
For two weeks, researchers had 17 men and women eat all their
meals and snacks, as much as they wanted, at a buffet where
the exact quantities consumed could be weighed and caloric intake calculated. Then for the next two weeks, the participants ate
a 200-calorie lunch, a commercially available food like a Kashi
bar or a Lean Pocket. But the rest of the day, they ate whatever
they wanted from the buffet.
Not counting lunch, the participants consumed 1,568 calories
on days they had the 200-calorie lunch and 1,560 on days
when they did not — an insignificant difference. But over all,
they consumed 245 fewer calories on low-calorie lunch days.
The result of that — unsurprisingly — was weight loss:
an average of 1.1 pounds per participant in two weeks.

Partnership for a Healthier America, which works in collaboration
with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative,
announced that leading grocery retailers throughout the US
have committed to bring healthy, affordable food to nearly
10 million people in the form of new and expanded stores
in areas that desperately need them. This is a huge help to
families in these areas because you can't eat healthy produce
if you don't have easy and affordable access to the stores. For further information check http://ahealthieramerica.or...

YOGA ON A TRAIN
While Mayor Bloomberg made his post hurricane commute to City Hall this morning, he made sure to warn New Yorkers of a "tough commute." But what he may have forgotten to include in his warning was the mention of a group of yoga-centric individuals spreading their limber legs on the trains on your way to work. They're the latest in crazy subway moments captured on YouTube. Although the video may not be as shocking as the man caught dangling a rat in his mouth, it does get everyone back in the swing of endearingly bizarre people you'll meet on the train, especially after an unprecedented MTA shutdown this past weekend. Check out the Video I've uploaded!
