The Mission Bay Yact Club has elected to become one of the 50 yacht clubs nation wide that hold a Leukemia Cup Regatta to support The Leukemia Lymphoma Society in their efforts to both cure blood cancers and support local patients living with blood cancers. To accomplish this they have designated the One Design regatta in August (August 20-21) as the first annual Mission Bay Leukemia Cup Regatta.
You can join in the fun by raising funds to help accelerate cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma. Fundraising is easy, and we will provide all of the help that you need, including an online fundraising page that you can personalize with a photo of your boat or someone you are sailing in honor or memory of. To help to motivate you to jump in as soon as possible, our national chairperson, Gary Jobson, has provided copies of "An American Sailing Story", his recently published memoir. The first five sailors to raise $250 will receive Gary's book and two limited-edition Mount Gay Leukemia Cup Regatta caps. And if you set up your fund raising page by August 5, your boat name will be included on the Leukemia Cup Regatta t-shirt!
The Leukemia Lymphoma Society has made over $750 million in research grants since its founding. As a result of these efforts, 19 of the 39 drugs approved by the FDA over the last decade started out as LLS funded research projects. Of those 19 drugs, 5 have gone on to be approved for the treatment of other cancers including Gleevec which has been described as the "magic bullet" of cancer drugs. LLS also provides patient support ranging from grants of financial assistance for cancer patients who are having trouble affording their treatments, to connecting new patients with survivors to help them through their treatment.
