About
I'm new to running and have managed to get a place in this year's NY marathon. I'm hoping to pick up tips and advice about how to progress. I also have two small children and work ...

@Footnote Hello Footnote, just to let you know I have shin splints and its worse in my left leg. So since you and the physio suggested ruling out Sunday's half marathon, that's what I'm doing. I've been given some exercises and I'm trying not to get too down. I'm supplementing this week's non-running with a bit of spinnng and a quick turn in the pool. All being well I'm going to do some gentle training next week!

@Footnote Thank you!!
i hadn't read your advice before I attempted a little trot around Richmond Park this morning. Stabbing pains on the sides of my shin prevented me going more than a mile, before I decided enough's enough. I'm resting and following the hot and cold therapy tips below. I'm also going to get checked out by a physio, I want to be sure its just strain and nothing more serious.
Thank you so so much, just reading it has made me feel a lot more positive....
But I am supposed to be doing a half marathon on Sunday, was going to wait and see...

@Footnote Dear Footnote. I'm training for the NY marathon (this is my first marathon), and I had been progressing quite well.... but I'm really struggling with my calves. They just hurt. I'm stretching, I'm doing yoga and pilates but everytime i do a long run - i suffer for a couple of days after and its affecting my other training runs. I did 15 miles on tues and haven't been able to run at all since without tears coming to my eyes.
I'm trying to get by with cross training (spinning) but I'm getting v anxious that this is here to stay.
Is there anything else I can do?
