Getting started in dinghy sailing can boost your body's fitness and refresh your mind after a long, hard week in the office. However, before you launch straight into your own dinghy training exercise, it might be an idea to shop around for a RYA-approved dinghy sailing source. Here's the realbuzz guide to some of the dinghy sailing courses out there.

Most practical courses are run over a minimum of two days and you can expect to be taught by an experienced skipper aboard a seaworthy dinghy. You need to start off with the Dinghy Level One – Start Sailing course. This offers an introduction to sailing, covering the minimum required to get you afloat under supervision.

The real base for your sailing career is the Dinghy Level Two- Basic Skills course. This will get you past the basics and on to competently controlling your boat in light winds.

The sailing dinghy courses from RYA sailing clubs are as follows:

Dinghy Level One - Start Sailing
Introduction to the sport of sailing. Covers all you need to know to get afloat under supervision.

Suggested minimum pre-course experience : None
Assumed knowledge : None
Course content :

How to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovery
Ability after course :
Able to sail in light winds under supervision
Minimum duration : Two days minimum

Dinghy Level Two - Basic Skills
This course sets out the foundations of sailing for you. By the end of it you'll be a competent light wind sailor.

Assumed knowledge : Knowledge to Level One standard
Course content :


Often combined with Level One into a four or five day course. Rigging, launching, sailing in all directions. Capsize recovery and essential safety background.
Ability after course :
Able to sail and make decisions in good conditions
Minimum duration : Two days minimum

 

Dinghy Seamanship Skills
How to handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat.

Assumed knowledge : Knowledge to Level Two standard
Course content :


Training includes: launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering man overboard, anchoring.
Ability after course :
Able to handle a wide range of situations afloat
Minimum duration :   Twodays

Dinghy Sailing with Spinnakers
Everything you need to know about sailing with a kite whether conventional or asymmetric.

Assumed knowledge : Knowledge to Level Two standard
Course content :


How to rig the boat, gybe and recover one type of spinnaker, either conventional or asymmetric. How to sail the best possible course downwind.
Ability after course :

Able to use one type of spinnaker, coventional or asymmetric
Minimum duration : Two days

Dinghy Day Sailing
Passage planning and decision making for small boat cruising.

Assumed knowledge :
Skills and background to at least Level Two
Course content :

Preparing and planning for a day cruise. Pilotage and decision making including adverse conditions.
Ability after course :
Able to plan and execute a cruise, depending on conditions
Minimum duration : Two days minimum

 

Dinghy Start Racing
Having learned to sail you may wish to start racing and join a club. This course takes you through the fundamentals of getting off the start line and round the course.

Assumed knowledge : Minimum Level Two standard
Course content :

All the skills required to enjoy club racing including how to maximize boat speed and how to outwit your opponents.
Ability after course :

Able to take part in club racing in good conditions (depending on experience)
Minimum duration : Two days

Dinghy Performance Sailing
Improve your boat handling and confidence in performance dinghies.

Assumed knowledge :

Competent boat handling - probably at least one full season after Level Two
Course content :

Coaching to improve your sailing, primarily in two person boats with spinnakers.
Ability after course :
Able to sail faster and more efficiently in all conditions
Minimum duration : Two days minimum
