London Marathon - again?

The penultimate line in my FLM 2009 blog said "Never again". The final line said "I'm in the ballot for next year!"

I've been rejected every year since, but always run the Halstead & Essex ace instead.

But, this year, a local charity lost runners to illness and injury and I was given the chance to pick up a last minute GB place. How could I refuse?

This is a distance I've run 5 times now and smacked into the wall every time!

This blog will be about a different training plan, helping a marathon newbie with a ballot place and trying to make sure I'm ready to really enjoy the day

I hope you enjoy the read

Halstead, how did it go?

If I look a the goals I set last week: Finish the race (tick) Beat my VLM time (tick) Run the whole race (cross, see below) Run a PB (TICK!!!!!) Sub 4 hours (cross) Bottom line, I set out with a plan, ignored it after the first mile, went out too quic...

Oh no, not now

Injury free training period? Cancel that Woken in the night by sharp pain in my right ankle. I suffered from this last year, but this year it's been clear No explanation, I don't remember turning it or twisting it, but now it's swollen, stiff and painfu...

2 days to go

In reality, I hope in 2 days I'm close to finished. 2pm will be the cut off for a sub 4. Getting very nervous. This morning's easy 30 mins was quite a struggle. OK, it was early, before brekkie, before first coffee or any drink at all, but it was a stru...

Getting edgy

I guess it's just the taper and I'm worrying about 2 marathons in 3 weeks. I need to run Got home from work last night and found I had nothing to do! No run, no significant football on the box, shouldn't go out for a bevvie, too wet to cut the grass. I ...

Embarassed?

Yes. Definitely Obviously RDM and Mr A are happy with 6th place, the FA Cup and guaranteed Euro footie next season (albeit Thu night Channel 5!) so they put out the reserves against Luckypool last night. None of those players will start the UCL final ag...

Back to the grind

Early train, grumpy commuters and cheerful conductors. The best observations of the human race happen on commuter trains around the world. Some guys phone just went off, loud calypso ring tone. Lots of tutting and harumphing all around. Feeling pretty t...

The final push

A week to go, and I'm planning 6 days of gentle jogging, sensible eating and good hydration. Can I stick to it? The gentle jogging will be the most difficult, finished yesterdays easy run with a monster sprint...but the hammies held up OK Forecast for H...

Couple of days rest...

...and I've perked up a bit. Should have done an easy 3 miles yesterday and rested today, but chose to rest Thu and Fri and run today. No watch, no GPS with headphones just went out and jogged at a comforatble pace Felt good, felt easy, did a little mor...

What's the plan for Halstead?

Starting to get my head around what I want to achieve at Halstead next week. OK, sub-4 would be great but is it realistic? Anyway, I'm going to write this down and see how it looks. Here are my goals for 13th May, in order of importance Finish the race...

Really tired

After Sunday's LSR in the rain I've followed the training plan. 3 mile easy run on Monday, which was ok. 4x800 repeats on Tuesday, which was a real struggle. I ran with the club, who planned a 5-6 miler in the country, and decided to just run off 4 time...

Is Uncle Woy the man?

Will Roy Hodgson drive England to some sort of glory? I have to admit I'm a little underwhelmed. I always thought your national team manager/coach should be a very successful domestic coach or a well respected ex international. Not sure Woy falls into e...

What a crazy week - training ...

Seems like I've been posting all week but only talked about last weekend. Well, it was quite important! A few people have missed posts coz I've been doing 2 a day. Here's a quick catch up: Pre race (5am!) http://www.realbuzz.com/blogs/u/Blueski35/london...

The analysis

Hope you can read this: Pretty erratic as I ducked and weaved trying to get space to run the pace I wanted but never quite getting there. I think everybody speeds up in mile 13 to look good going over Tower Bridge Relaxed around mile 17 but you wouldn't...

North of the river

So what about the second half of the race? The first half was an assault on the senses. The colours, the noise and even the smells (burgers, hot dogs, onions, luco orange and BO) Tower Bridge and the turn onto East Smithfield. Loads of spectators, too m...

South London

9:45 and we’re off. Well, we’re bunched up and shuffling slowly forwards. I stripped off my long sleeved tee and chucked it over the fence, along with a water bottle I’d been holding (just in case I need wee break in the throng, Depardieu style). Even t...

Mixed emotions

What a busy few days. Getting to London, planning the viewing spots, the race, the aftermath, THE FOOTBALL! Can't get back to normal and relax. Why mixed emotions? I keep swapping between the pure enjoyment of the event itself... the runners, the costum...

Woken early, can't get back t...

Too many things on my mind. Compression shirt? Which one? Sunglasses or not? How soon to try and get itn othe Blue start? Go to my pen or try and get in an faster one? Dodge and weave to get my pace or go with the flow until the crowd spreads out? One A...

The calm before the storm?

All plans for today have gone out of the window. #2 son has been offered a part time job at the local Tesco, which is great news. Not so good is the fact he has to work TODAY from 7am-2pm. This will be his induction. It's important so we won't leave for...

DId I break the blogger?

It was all a bit rushed. Train, work, Expo, run, beer, football, sleep, train and work again. So much so I think I broke the blog I wrote on the train? Never mind, here it is again... Who expected Chelski to beat Barcalona? Nobody, except a few of us di...

Cool for cats

Thought I'd take a little diversion today. Lots of talk on the forum about dogs, dog owners and their (lack of) pet control. We're too busy to own a dog so we have cats. And cats make me laugh, for so many reasons, even when I'm running. Have you recogn...

Martinez for England?

Time to take Wigan seriously? They deserved somethjing at Chelski, beat Man U and Arsenal. Martinez has something going there. Shame he couldn't have drummed it up earlier in the seaaon Difficult to enjoy the FA Cup result. The ridiculous second goal ha...

Only 7 days to go

I tried to shake myself out of my funk by running in my race day gear (or as close as I could get) and taking a different route. Based on the weather forecast this morning was close to next week's forecast so I was in long sleeved compression top under ...

Really struggling...

...for enthusiasm! I'm in a real funk at the moment. Couldn't get motivated for any running this week and I can't work out why. The taper period is always difficult mentally but I've not struggled this badly in the 5 years I've been doing this I tried t...
