Running Ant

The 2006 Great North Run was my first half marathon, in fact my first organised race of any kind. I beat my target time of 2 hours and I'm now hoping to keep my training going over the winter and find some more runs to take part in. I'd like to beat my time for a half marathon and might even get chance to try a full marathon next year.

I'll continue to log my progress on this blog as it has been a very useful record of my training.

Finally got round to posting a picture from last Sunday. We may look fresh as daisies (almost) but no amount of baby wipes could have masked the smell of 13 miles hard work in the car on the way home. Poor parents! We've sent off o...

1 hr 58 mins 32 secs!

1/10/06     13.1 miles    9:03 min/mile What a fantastic day! The atmosphere was great and although it was really tough going (for the 13.1 miles and the 1 mile sprint for the late baggage bus at the start!) I'm really pleased that I ...

This seasons colour?

29/9/06     2 and a bit miles    8:30 min/mile I've rested since Tuesday but my car has broken so this morning I dropped it at the garage and ran the very hilly 2 miles back. I'll probably walk to fetch it later so as not to overdo it...

4 days to go!

26/9/06     2 miles     7:45 min/mile Legs still feel tight from the weekend so did a short run last night in an attempt to loosen my muscles. Seems to have worked a bit! I'll do another very short run tomorrow but other than that its...

Both of us ready and raring

"Hey guys its only 13.1 miles! Let's work it!" Dragged Suzy out of bed at 7.30am yesterday morning to do her long run that she missed on Saturday. With aching legs I hobbled around the route carrying water and playing at b...

Last long run

23/9/06     12 miles     9:35 min/mile Ran 3 times around Torside Reservoir in 1hour 55 mins. Just slow of the pace I'm aiming for but didn't want to overdo it before next week. It still hurt (red wine last night  didn't...

Nice and easy does it

18/9/06     2 miles     7:30 min/mile 20/9/06     4 miles     8:53 min/mile As seems to be the norm for great north runners I'm now easing off on my training. It seemed odd only running 2 miles on Monday and I felt like I'...

2 weeks to go

16/9/06     10 miles     9:00 min/mile Another long run yesterday. Felt ok a short while after and feel fine today but my legs wouldn't go any further than 10 miles. Hopefully this was only because I've done 2 long runs within a few d...

The GNR insect diet

11/9/06     4 miles     8:07 min/mile  13/9/06     8 miles     9:00 min/mile Flies swallowed so far: 7 The GNR magazine has helpfully printed some very scary warnings for people who don't prepare properly to ru...

Look out for 34958!

Our numbers came in the post today as well as our microchips (Not the McCain type) which will give us our times when we complete the run, hopefully. Suzy's number is 34954. Another package from the MND Association contained our red and whi...

Back in action again

6/9/06     4 miles     8:42 min/mile  8/9/06     6 miles     9:10 min/mile  I've had a serious bout of man flu (bit of a cold) since France so have not done any running until this week. Wednesday's 4 miler was really hard ...

Back from hols

No posts for a while because we have been to Lacanau in France We've not been so strict on timing our runs while we've been away but I guess we went out 4 or 5 times running distances of 4-6 miles. I think that's pretty impressive for...

Getting quicker

8/8/06     4 miles     8:23 min/mile  Tonight I ran my 4 mile route 6 minutes quicker than last week. Celebrated with fish and chips!

Let's get physical, physical!

6/8/06     5 miles     9:10 min/mile  Yesterday I managed a fairly comfortable 5 miles running each mile in an average of just over 9 minutes, just about on target. As I looped round the final bit of path which runs around the huge bu...

No more loafing!

1/8/06     4 miles     9:45 min/mile 4/8/06     4 miles     9:30 min/mile My training programme is now limping in to action. Following a 4 mile run on Tuesday my carefully plotted excel sheet tells me that I should have do...
