Living the dream: preparing for the 2013 London Marathon

My blog is about my journey to accomplishing my goal of running the London Marathon. I'm running in support of Razed Roof, a small inclusive theatre company based in Harlow. My blog includes the highs and lows of training, my hopes and fears, as well as offering support and hopefully some inspiration to fellow and future marathon runners.

Life After VLM

It's been one week now since I wrote my post-marathon blog entry. My legs feel back to normal and blisters are almost healed, although one has turned purple - I'll blame it on the Compeed plaster I wore afterwards. Last week felt a bit surreal that it w...

A Marathon Dream Comes True

It is the morning after the London Marathon and although my legs ache and I have the biggest blood blister I have ever seen sticking out of my big toe, I am still buzzing from all the excitement yesterday! Although I did not quite manage my 4:15 target,...

Onwards and Upwards Fellow Ru...

The excitement I felt this week about next Sunday was somewhat subdued since I heard the tragic news about the Boston Marathon explosions. This event can only be described as devastating and shocking and my thoughts are with those who lost loved ones. F...

Bring on the Marathon!

I am writing this blog post with a mixture of excitement, aspiration and slight nervousness as I approach the final week before the big day. I ran well in the club’s handicap on Tuesday, coming 4th out of about 20 runners, improving last week’s time by ...

Let the Taper Begin

After last Friday’s 20 miler I enjoyed a running-free weekend and made the most of being able to drink (wine-wise) and eat (chocolate-wise) as much as I wanted for the Easter bank holiday, which also included my husband’s birthday and a friend’s wedding...

Reaching the peak of the moun...

I had my first ever sports massage on Monday evening this week. Several people had suggested it and mentioned the benefits to me and I know a lady in my running club who has her own sports therapy business, so I decided to book a few sessions with her. ...

No Sign of Spring Yet!

After feeling a slight niggle in my left calf during and since last week’s 16 miler, I decided that a few days rest was in order just to be on the safe side. I managed 11 out of the scheduled 12 400m reps on my speed session on Tuesday. The last lap I d...

Where has spring gone?

After last week’s windy 18 miles of mud and rain around Bishop’s Stortford, I was optimistic that this week’s 16 mile run from Harlow would be easier. Michelle and I had arranged to meet up at Mark Hall Sports Centre with Lindsey, another London Maratho...

Mud Mania in Bishop’s Stortford

This week I had arranged to join a marathon paced run organised by the Bishop’s Stortford Running Club, with my friend Michelle. As the aim was 20 miles, we pre-warned the club that we may be running at a pace of at least 10 minute miles, seeing as it w...

A Surprisingly Enjoyable Run

I was quite worried about this week’s run as I’d felt tired on my 5 mile run on Thursday and I was starting to come down with a cold. Besides this, most of the running club members were running the Silverstone Half Marathon, but I hadn’t managed to ente...

The Halfway Point

Well, I can’t quite believe that I’m now half way in my training – it is all going so quickly and now the VLM is less than two months away! When I checked this week’s long run on my plan I was relieved to see it was only 13 miles, after running my first...

Mud Alert!

Due to celebrating my 30th birthday last weekend and spending four lovely days in Prague I did not manage to run for a whole week. After returning home from the airport on Thursday night I got up ready for a not too early 8 mile run around Harlow, which...

Struck by the Dreaded Winter ...

Just when I thought there was no stopping me (once the weather had improved) I caught a cold. I woke up with those horrible cold symptoms (which I need not describe to you) on Monday morning, after my 14 mile run the day before. Feeling bunged up all we...

Hatfield Heath Countryside Run

My usual marathon training buddy was running on Saturday this weekend so I decided to join a group of runners from my club in a run from Hatfield Heath on Sunday morning. Janice, who lives there and is also training for a marathon, had organised the run...

Return of the Rain

The snow in Harlow continued, after my long run last Sunday, for the rest of the day and into the evening, until we had a good couple of inches. Although Harlow did not see any more significant snow fall after this, the temperatures were still freezing,...

Snow Run

After the snow hit Harlow last Friday my scheduled 13 mile weekend run was looking doubtful. However, I had already made plans to run with a fellow VLM runner at 9am on the Sunday. The heavy snow was not forecast until Sunday afternoon so we were hopefu...

The Only Way is Up

On Thursday night it was my charity Razed Roof’s Big Launch and I was invited to attend as their marathon runner. The inclusive theatre company proudly unveiled their new logo, designed by a graphics student at Harlow College. It was based on the origin...

A Dream Come True

Since I have been a member of the Harlow Running Club I have envied the other runners who rave about their experiences running in the London Marathon. I've also joined the crowds lined along the streets to cheer on my husband on previous years, and been...
