I'm looking at getting a new bike, do I really need to buy a road bike?

Your choice of bike will very much depend on what you want it for and where you intend riding it. If you intend to ride a bike both on or off-road then a road bike may not be the most suitable, perhaps a hybrid or mountain bike might be more suitable, but it depends how extreme the terrain actually is.

If you are looking to build up your distance to riding a sportive or other long distance event then a road bike is the more efficient option. Road bikes are lighter and primarily built for speed with gearing suited to flat or hilly terrain. In more recent years road bikes are being produced with a less aggressive geometry giving riders a more comfortable relaxed position ride.

I'm more than a bit self-conscious. Do I really have to wear the lycra gear typically worn by most road cyclists?
